Carbonation reactions of concrete with carbon dioxide and, mainly, the chloride salts action are the main causes responsible for concrete degradation. Protective coatings help to improve the durability of concrete structures by acting as a physical barrier against the corrosion agents. Waterborne paints are usually used for concrete protection rather than solvent-based paints since they are less pollutant. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the pore size and porosity on the permeability of the paints films toward sodium chloride. Three characterization methods from membrane science were implemented to characterize paint coatings. The time-lag method was used to determine the permeability toward the sodium chloride and toward helium and argon, these for approximately 100% relative humidity. From the seven waterborne paints formulated, only one was found to be suitable for surface protection of reinforced concrete, since its permeability toward NaCl was smaller than 10−14 m2 s−1, the threshold value required by National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) in Portugal. For the formulated paints, it was observed that the average pore size correlates well with the permeability toward sodium chloride. This is an important result since obtaining the permeability toward sodium chloride of corrosion protective paints is very time consuming, while the average pore size can be obtained in a much shorter time. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An in-house set-up was developed for determining the permeability of paint films towards carbon dioxide. The system implemented the so-called Wicke-Kallenback method, described in EN 1062-6. This method consists of a two-chamber permeation cell divided by a supported paint film. A carbon dioxide/nitrogen mixture stream (15% CO2/85% N2) is fed to the retentate chamber and a nitrogen carrier stream is fed to the permeate chamber. Carbon dioxide permeates from the retentate to the permeate chamber. The carbon dioxide flow rate is obtained from the permeate concentration and flow rate. From the carbon dioxide flow rate it is possible to calculate the paint film permeability towards this gas. The coating system is applied on a Kraft paper support sheet; the Kraft paper by itself shows negligible permeation resistance. Coatings to be considered as "surface protection systems for concrete" must comply with EN 1504-2. This standard requires that the paint film permeability have an equivalent air thickness of SD >_ 50 m. The unit developed was able to quickly determine permeabilities as low as an equivalent air thickness of SD = 1500 m. SEM imaging indicated good dispersion of silica within the polymer matrix. This hybrid coating showed significantly lower dirt pick-up than the equivalent paint formulation without nanosilica additive, towards both organic and inorganic ashes. Washing with running water further decreases dirt retention. This self-cleaning performance remained unchanged after several dirt/washing cycles, during a 1-month period. Surface hardness measurements indicated no significant differences between the original and composite paint films. The lower dirt pick-up was attributed to nanoroughness created by the nanosilica particles present in the film. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An apparatus for determining the permeability of paint films towards chloride ion is described. This set-up implements the time-lag method and consists of a permeation cell made up of two chambers divided by a supported paint film. The upper chamber contains an aqueous sodium chloride solution and the lower one, water. The permeability is obtained from the conductivity history read at the lower chamber. Osmotic pressure issue is addressed and the reproducibility of the results reported. The time-lag method is not described in any standard. The requirement concerning "surface protection systems for concrete" for chloride ion permeability is not quantified in prEN 1504-2. The standard establishes that this requirement is "subject to national standards and national regulations" but when the capillary adsorption of water is lower than 0.01 kg/(m2h0.5) the diffusion of chloride ion is not to be expected. Some experimental results prove this is not correct and, in Portugal, the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) has proposed a threshold permeability value of 10-14 m2/sec for coatings claiming to be corrosion protective.
