PlumesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Gallinaceous feathers (from Gallus gallus domesticus, strains Cobb 500 and Label) were used as adsorbent for colour removal from a simulated textile effluent containing a wool reactive dye, the Yellow Lanasol 4G (CI Reactive Yellow 39). A brief chemical and physical characterisation of feathers was performed. Equilibrium studies at different selected temperatures, in the range 10–60 °C, were carried out. The equilibrium data were analysed using the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. Adsorption capacity strongly increases with temperature. A maximum adsorption capacity of around 300 mg g?1 was obtained for Gallus gallus feathers, strain Cobb 500, at 60 °C, while for strain Label, 200 mg g?1 was obtained at 50 °C. For each type of feather a generalised model, valid for a given temperature range, was obtained. The isosteric heat of adsorption calculated was positive, so the mechanism involved in the adsorption process should correspond to endothermic chemisorption. This study provides important information concerning the use of gallinaceous feathers without any chemical treatment for colour removal from real textile wastewaters. The results in this study indicated that gallinaceous feathers, when compared with activated carbon, open promising perspectives concerning their utilisation for colour removal from textile effluent discharged at high temperatures; moreover, it would be an alternative for the valorisation of this waste. StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : We have carried out this study to characterise the physico-chemical properties of the tannery effluents at different treatment tanks and to identify if any aerobic planktonic forms are thriving in the toxic effluents. Pearson correlation matrix suggests significant positive correlation between pH and TSS, acidity, Pb and Cr. A significant positive correlation between TDS, EC and salinity is also recorded. The concentrations of six metals, namely, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe are well within the safe limits. Principal Component Analysis, a dimension-reduction tool, shows that out of seventeen physico-chemical variables, fourteen variables contain most of the information to influence the biota. Canonical Correspondence Analysis plot strongly suggests that the physico-chemical factors significantly influenced the occurrence of phytoplankton in treatment sites of CETPs. This work addressed the basic study questions, whether any oxygen liberating life-foret is thriving in the treatment tanks that could be used in biological amelioration of toxic tannery effluents! We record the occurrence of three species of Cyanophyceae, one species under Chlorophyceae, two under Euglenophyceae and a single Bacillariophyceae in the treatment tanks extending an opportunity for further researches on the efficiency of these algal species in ameliorating different toxicants in the tannery wastewaters. C’est un métal pauvre, malléable, de couleur argent, qui est remarquable pour sa résistance à l’oxydation13 et sa faible densité. C'est le métal le plus abondant de l'écorce terrestre et le troisième élément le plus abondant après l'oxygène et le silicium ; il représente en moyenne 8 % de la masse des matériaux de la surface solide de notre planète. L'aluminium est trop réactif pour exister à l'état natif dans le milieu naturel : on le trouve au contraire sous forme combinée dans plus de 270 minéraux différents, son minerai principal étant la bauxite, où il est présent sous forme d’oxyde hydraté dont on extrait l’alumine. Il peut aussi être extrait de la néphéline, de la leucite, de la sillimanite, de l'andalousite et de la muscovite.
L'aluminium métallique est très oxydable, mais est immédiatement passivé par une fine couche d'alumine Al2O3 imperméable de quelques micromètres d'épaisseur qui protège la masse métallique de la corrosion. On parle de protection cinétique, par opposition à une protection thermodynamique, car l’aluminium reste en tout état de cause très sensible à l'oxydation. Cette résistance à la corrosion et sa remarquable légèreté en ont fait un matériau très utilisé industriellement.
L'aluminium est un produit industriel important, sous forme pure ou alliée, notamment dans l'aéronautique, les transports et la construction. Sa nature réactive en fait également un catalyseur et un additif dans l'industrie chimique ; il est ainsi utilisé pour accroître la puissance explosive du nitrate d'ammonium.

Tannage Résumé : The application and mechanism study of microwave irradiation in traditional industries have attracted considerable attention owing to the unique thermal and athermal effects that could lead to unexpected benefits in high-efficiency and clean production. Herein, we report the investigation of the aluminum tanning under microwave irradiation upon using hide powder and skin pieces, respectively, as simulants of real hide or skin. The aluminum tanning process and the tanned products under microwave heating (MWH) were studied and compared with those of conventional water bath heating (WBH) as the controls. For the tanning system of hide powder, the tanning effluents were analyzed in terms of pH, conductivity, dielectric constant and aluminum content, and the tanned powder was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and FT-IR spectroscopy. For the skin piece system, the pH and aluminum content of tanning effluents were also determined, and at the same time, DSC, TG, SEM, FT-IR and shrinkage temperature were used to illustrate the actions of microwaves on the structure and properties of the tanned pieces. The results show that aluminum reactivity in the penetration and binding process of collagen fibers in hide powder and skin pieces improved using microwave treatment. The residual aluminum content was greatly reduced by microwave heating action, and the increased amount of aluminum with evener distribution was observed in the tanned products. Microwave irradiation also resulted in the tanned products with better thermal stability and thermal decomposition resistance. This work further promotes application of microwave treatments for aluminum-based tanning in leather industry. Travail de rivière (cuir)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tannery wastewater usually contains a high content of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), which increases the difficulty of wastewater treatment. The objective of this work is to investigate the distribution of NH3-N in wastewaters from beamhouse processes and analyze the origin of NH3-N in each operation, so that the strategies that can reduce NH3-N at the origin could be suggested. Not surprisingly, the results demonstrate that NH3-N mainly concentrates in deliming and bating wastewaters due to the addition of ammonium salts in these two operations. This problem can be solved by using non-ammonia deliming and bating agents. A small quantity of NH3-N arises from washing and soaking processes because of decomposition of proteins by microorganisms. But the NH3-N in washing and soaking wastewaters may considerably increase when skins are badly preserved or the microorganisms in soaking float are not properly inhibited. Therefore, the effective antibacterial measures are important to diminish the production of NH3-N in beamhouse processes. As for unhairing/liming process, NH3-N in wastewater is mainly originated from hydrolysis of proteins, such as keratin and collagen, by strong alkali. Hair-saving unhairing and pelt swelling under milder conditions favor the decrease of NH3-N discharge. In fact, the amount of organic nitrogen released from washing, soaking and liming processes is much more than NH3-N. The experimental results indicate that the organic nitrogen mainly results from non-collagen proteins and their hydrolysates. This means the discharge of organic nitrogen is difficult to be avoided, and it may constitute a threat to end-of-pipe treatment of NH3-N.
