Amongst others, amines and isocyanates are used as crosslinking components for curing reactions, meeting the highly demanding properties of the coatings industry. In this work, a new crosslinking reaction for coatings based on oxazoline chemistry is investigated with the objective to overcome disadvantages of established systems and fulfill the need for sustainable coating compounds. The oxazoline-group containing resin, synthesized from commercially available substances, undergoes cationic self-crosslinking polymerization to build up a network based on urethane and amide moieties. NMR-, IR- and ES-mass spectroscopy are suitable techniques to characterize the synthesized oxazoline monomers, which are linked to polyisocyanates and polymerized afterwards via self-polymerization. The progress of crosslinking is followed by changes in IR spectra and by rheological measurements to calculate time dependent values for storage and loss modulus. The glass transition temperature of the resulting coating is determined, too. Furthermore, sol–gel-analysis is performed to determine the degree of crosslinking. After application on steel and aluminium panels, application tests are performed. In addition to excellent adhesion to the substrate, the polymer network shows promising mechanical properties and with that it could represent a new technology for the coatings industry.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Composite coatings were fabricated based on a graphene oxide–metal oxide/urushiol formaldehyde polymer (GO–TiO2/UFP, GO–SiO2/UFP and GO–Y2O3/UFP) system with modifications, and its effectiveness in corrosion protection of metal substrates was demonstrated. First, a GO–TiO2 composite was synthesized using titanium dioxide loading on GO via 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The GO–Y2O3 composite was synthesized using nano-yttrium oxide intercalating into GO through two different silane coupling agents. The GO–SiO2 composite was synthesized via an in-situ two-step sol-gel process utilizing APTES and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in an aqueous ethanol solution. The morphology and structure of the GO–metal oxide composites (GO–TiO2, GO–Y2O3 and GO–SiO2) were studied. Subsequently, GO–metal oxides were incorporated into UFP to investigate the composite’s effectiveness in corrosion protection of metal substrates. Compared with GO–TiO2/UFP and GO–Y2O3/UFP, GO–SiO2/UFP showed superior alkali-resistance enhancing performance. Additionally, GO crosslinked with APTES–TiO2 via covalent bonds and the well-dispersed GO–TiO2 in UFP improved the electrochemical corrosion properties of the UFP coatings, most likely due to the obstruction of the diffusion pathways inside the UFP coating matrix, thus preventing the diffusion of penetrating species. It was revealed that the corrosion resistance of GO–TiO2/UFP composite coating was noticeably higher than GO–SiO2/UFP and GO–Y2O3/UFP composite coatings.

Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Flaky aluminum pigments with excellent corrosion resistance have found applications in diverse fields. In this study, a fluoropolymer has been incorporated in the aluminum pigment to effectively enhance its corrosion resistance, along with the improvement in the chemical resistance and thermal stability. Specifically, a uniform dense layer of poly(trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PTFEMA) has been directly coated on the surface of the flaky aluminum pigment by in situ polymerization. The encapsulated aluminum pigment exhibited high stability upon dipping in the alkaline solution (pH = 13) due to protection imparted by the fluoropolymer layer. The morphology of the fluoropolymer layer on the surface of the aluminum pigment was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the thermal stability of the encapsulated aluminum pigment was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The structure and composition of the fluoropolymer layer were further characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The stability of the aluminum pigment in alkaline aqueous media was investigated via hydrogen evolution experiments. Overall, the corrosion resistance of the aluminum pigment encapsulated with fluoropolymer was observed to be markedly improved owing to the presence of the PTFEMA layer. Morphological characterizations of the synthesized particles showed that shuttle shaped zinc is well embedded on the exfoliated nanographite particles without any agglomeration. The higher interfacial polarization of both the graphite and zinc particles contributes to the excellent electrical conductivity and hence refers it as an ideal microwave absorber in defense applications. The paint with 20% (w/v) loading of nanographite-zinc (1:1 ratio) particles is proficient in providing microwave absorption of − 18.06 dB at 8.19 GHz with a coating thickness of 1.43 mm. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This study demonstrates the coating of poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PHPMA) thin films from the corresponding monomer HPMA using pulsed-initiated chemical vapor deposition (pulsed-iCVD) method. The advantages of pulsing the power delivered to the filament wires during iCVD through successive on–off duty cycles (DC) are outlined by considering the deposition rates, structure, and morphology of as-deposited PHPMA films. FTIR and XPS analysis of the as-deposited films verifies that pulsing the filament power produces thin films of PHPMA, which is structurally very similar to that synthesized using classical continuous power iCVD. However, there is up to 70% increase in deposition rate upon pulsing the filament power in comparison with the continuous power iCVD. AFM analysis of the as-deposited films shows that the film morphology can be controlled by varying the DC during pulsed-iCVD. At a DC of 85.7%, the most hydrophilic film is observed with a measured water contact angle of 31°. Tribologie (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The influence of 0.5, 0.75, and 1 wt.% of graphene oxide (GrO) in nanocomposite coating on scratch behavior and tribological performance was analyzed. Graphite was oxidized using the Marcano and Tour method to obtain graphite oxide, which is thermally exfoliated at 700°C getting graphene oxide. The transformation of graphite to graphene oxide was evaluated via Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Effects of graphene oxide content on the friction and wear behavior of polyester composite coatings were evaluated under dry sliding conditions. Experimental findings showed that the addition of 0.5 wt.% GrO was effective in reducing the friction coefficient of polyester coating. Meanwhile, under the same sliding conditions, the wear results revealed that the polyester coating filled with 1 wt.% GrO has better antiwear ability compared to those filled with 0.5 and 0.75 wt.% GrO. From the scratch analyses, we deduced that coating scratch behavior was highly affected by the amount of fillers inside the polyester matrix. In fact, the best friction characteristic and scratch resistance were observed in the case of polyester coatings filled with the lower amount of GrO, namely 0.5 wt.%. PigmentsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Dual-purpose coated paper, which enables in-line inkjet printing with web offset, can be used for both offset and inkjet prints. This product has potential to meet the ever-increasing demand for printing individualized information on commercial printing materials. In this work, commercial samples were printed in the two presses. It was deduced that low permeability correlates with large color gamut volume. The correlation would be useful to design coating formulations for good printability. Also, we examined the packing of coating layers to identify a coating formulation that provides good printing quality in both offset and inkjet printing. Many combinations of pigments were tested, and the effects of particle shape on viscosity and packing were examined. For all coating colors, pigment mixtures with a weight ratio of 3:1 gave the highest packing density. The mixture of GCC 90 and delaminated clay with a weight ratio of 3:1 was the best selection studied for dual-purpose coated paper. Among commercial paper samples, a web offset coated paper showed the best overall performance, indicating that coating formulations with minimal blistering are suitable for dual-purpose coated paper. To extend the application of WPUA in the biological field, a novel ultraviolet-fluorinated waterborne polyurethane–acrylate (UV-WFPUA) film, which contains 2, 4-dihydroxybenzophenone (DHBP) as the ultraviolet (UV) absorber and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) as the fluorine monomer, was prepared. The paper discussed the effect of UV absorber and fluorine monomer on the UV adsorption performance, thermo-stability, and physical and mechanical properties of the UV-WFPUA film. Furthermore, it explored the independent and cooperative effects of UV absorber and fluorine monomer in affecting the antiprotein fouling property on a quantitative level. Results show that the antiprotein fouling performance of UV-WFPUA film significantly weakened after adding 0.4 wt.% DHPB since the average protein concentration increased from 0.14 to 0.37 mg/mL. In contrast, after adding 9 wt.% DFMA, the average protein concentration dropped from 0.37 to 0.13 mg/mL, indicating the antiprotein fouling properties improved. Therefore, the addition of fluorine monomer will contribute to antiprotein fouling and eliminate the adhesion of UV absorber with proteins. The excellent antiprotein fouling, thermal, and optical properties endow the waterborne polyurethane–acrylate films with promising applications in corneal contact lenses or intraocular lenses. Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Waterborne polymeric coating for corrosion protection has been of particular interest both in academia and industrial circles for years because of its low cost and low-volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. However, organic coating is permeable to water and oxygen resulting in the reduction of anticorrosion properties during coating application. In this study, waterborne corrosion-resistant hydrophobic-modified alkyd resin composite coatings using fluorinated acrylate–siloxane (FASAR) and submicron-sheet zinc phosphate (Zn3(PO4)2) pigment were prepared. The results of hydrophobicity, thermal, and mechanical measurements indicated that the FASAR30/5%Zn3(PO4)2 had excellent performance. More importantly, the EIS and potentiodynamic polarization tests revealed that the acquired films also exhibited high anticorrosion property for carbon steel. The corrosion current density (icorr) was 7.20 × 10−7 A cm−2, with an inhibition efficiency of 99.92%, and a corrosion rate of 8.37 × 10−3 mm per year. On the other hand, the impedance modulus (Zf = 0.01 Hz) of FASAR30/5%Zn3(PO4)2 still had 5.68 × 104 Ω cm2 after 14-day immersion in the 3.5 wt% NaCl solution.

The biopolymer nanocomposite was prepared by ionotropic gelation process using sodium tripolyphosphate as a crosslinking agent. The NZ was synthesized by the co-precipitation method and annealing at 650°C and characterized by scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, and transmission electron microscope. The average particle size of NZ is 12.80 nm. The biopolymer nanocomposite was a considerable rise in the swelling ratio when molecular weight of CS and crosslinking times increased. The NZ–CS/ST nanocomposite showed the percentage amount release of phosphorus and urea at the 14th day to be 64.00 and 41.93%, respectively. The obtained fertilizer was applied to grow Philodendron sp., resulting in better growth indicators than the control and urea. Consequently, the prepared nanocomposite maintains the water level and can further be used as slow-release fertilizers in agriculture. ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of novel zinc-polyurethane copolymers, which contained zinc cations in the form of polymeric salt and can be exchanged with the sodium ions in sea water, was prepared. As the ion exchange reaction proceeded, the zinc-polyurethane copolymers became soluble and leached out by the flow of sea water. The self-polishing rates of marine antifouling coatings formulated with the polymers proved to be easily controlled by the amount of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid. Marine field test revealed that zinc-polyurethane antifouling coatings had excellent efficiency in preventing marine biofouling for more than 12 months. These results proved that the zinc-polyurethane copolymers were a good candidate for the preparation of long-efficiency and controllable marine antifouling coatings. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Controlling the particle size of solid-particle-stabilized emulsion polymers is a challenge for coating applications where high-solid-content emulsion polymers are required. Clay-particle-stabilized styrene–acrylic copolymer emulsion was prepared by a seeded semibatch emulsion polymerization process. The effect of the concentrations of clay, peptizing agent, and methacrylic acid on the processing, final particle size, and coagulum of the emulsion polymer was studied. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and field-emission-gun scanning electron microscopy techniques were employed to characterize the emulsion polymers. The kinetics of polymerization were monitored based on the percentage solid conversion, and particle size (DLS) analysis suggested a homogeneous coagulative mechanism. The zeta potential of the polymer particles indicated good stability of the emulsion. A stable, coagulum-free, low particle size (~ 300 nm) emulsion was prepared using clay platelets, and the polymer film exhibited improved thermal and mechanical properties that will make this type of emulsion polymer of great use for coating applications. Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this article, two kinds of phosphorus-containing cardanol-based acrylates were designed and synthesized. Firstly, a pre-polymer (PT-HCE) with three arms was synthesized using hydroxyethyl cardanol ether (HCE) and phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) as raw materials. Then, the PT-HCE was acrylated to synthesize phosphate tris-hydroxyethyl cardanol epoxy acrylate resin (AEPT-HCE) and phosphate tris-hydroxyethyl cardanol photosensitive resin (APT-HCE). The structures of PT-HCE, AEPT-HCE and APT-HCE were characterized and the results showed that the photosensitive resins were successfully synthesized. In addition, AEPT-HCE and APT-HCE were used to prepare the flame-retardant UV/EB curing coatings. The properties of the coatings were tested, and the results revealed that different structures have a certain effect on Tg and tensile properties of the coatings. The cured films demonstrated excellent flame-retardant properties, showing flammability rating of V-0 in UL-94 test. Microcapsules, with the average size of 99 µm and shell thickness of 11 µm, were successfully synthesized via the interfacial polymerization technique and were incorporated into the polyurethane coating matrix. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope were employed to investigate the healing performance and corrosion behavior of the coatings on the carbon steel substrate. The recorded results revealed that artificial scratches were successfully healed and the coating containing 20 wt% microcapsules exhibited the best healing performance (85% healing efficiency) among all the prepared coatings. The self-healing ability of the coatings was verified via scanning electron microscope. After 24 h, the healing efficiency attained a reasonable value of 68% during exposure to test solution. It was found that corrosion resistance and coating adhesion were significantly improved by incorporating the microcapsules into the coating. Curcumin-modified graphene oxide (GO-CU) as an antibacterial agent was prepared using the adsorption method. GO-CU was incorporated in polyurethane (PU) coatings at concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5 wt%. Synthesized GO-CU was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, transmission scanning electron microscopy, and zeta potential measurement. Curcumin content in GO-CU was determined by thermogravimetric analysis. Antibacterial properties of GO-CU powder and PU coatings containing GO-CU were investigated by counting the colony-forming unit (CFU) of Escherichia coli (E. coli) strain. The results showed that curcumin was attached on GO-CU surface and curcumin content in GO-CU was about 32.9%. GO-CU provided a higher antibacterial effect against E. coli than GO. The antibacterial efficiency of PU coatings containing 0.1 wt% GO-CU was 85.8%; however, the increase in GO-CU concentration did not significantly increase the antibacterial efficiency of PU coating.
ThermochromieIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : In this study, the fibrous mesoporous silica F-SiO2 was functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The reversible thermochromic composites of fibrous mesoporous silica (F-SiO2) and amino group-modified fibrous mesoporous silica (F-SiO2-NH2) microspheres loaded with cresol red-boric acid (CR-BA) were termed as S2 (F-SiO2/CR-BA) and SN2 (F-SiO2-NH2/CR-BA), respectively. The materials obtained were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The fibrous morphology of this rigid carrier was maintained after loading with the CR-BA composite system. Owing to the APTES modification, the F-SiO2-NH2/CR-BA composites underwent more severe color changes than the F-SiO2/CR-BA composites. In addition, the F-SiO2-NH2/CR-BA composites can recover the original color in only 210 s, illustrating excellent reversibility.

ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is a noble class of material that has drawn considerable attention due to its numerous properties such as mechanical robustness, high aspect ratio, lower coefficient of thermal expansion, water retention ability, barrier properties to oxygen, compatibility with biomaterials, biodegradability, large surface area and interesting rheology. This present work deals with the rheology of MFC suspension in water. The effect of temperature on the concentration of the suspension of MFC was studied. Three regimes of MFC were observed for the shear rate lying in the range of 0.01–1000 s−1, supported by a buildup of a network of hydroxyl groups present on the surface, resulting in shear thinning, shear thickening, and shear thinning regions, respectively. An increase in the concentration of MFC, increased viscosity, and the dominance of storage modulus were observed. A high value of storage modulus indicates a higher degree of crosslinking of fibrils. The experimental data were well fitted by using the Ostwald-de Waele power law model. The results suggested that an increase in the temperature did not have any significant effect on the MFC rheology in the temperature range of 25–60°C. The Gaussian process regression model was used to determine the performance parameters. Dynamic oscillatory measurements were performed to validate the viscoelastic behavior. Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Dirt pick-up is a long-standing issue for exterior architectural coatings. Dirt pick-up resistance (DPR) is highly sought by end users, and significant resources have been committed by paint manufacturers to improve it. The task is complicated by the multitude of regional and local factors such as seasonal weather, intensity of economic activity, or atmospheric particle burden. Typically, paint manufacturers try to control DPR via careful selection of additives and formula optimization. Testing the new formulas in real time is long and, therefore, there is a clear need for a faster and more reliable test that takes into account the key elements of the dirt pick-up mechanism: particle transport, adhesion, and release to/from the surface. Our team has developed an accelerated test that focuses on thermally driven adhesion and takes a fraction of the time necessary for outdoor exposure testing. The test correlates well with early outdoor exposure results when formulation parameters are controlled and when there are moderate-to-large performance differences among paint formulas. The test was used to improve the accelerated DPR of a paint formula, which subsequently was verified against real-time outdoor exposure in three geographic regions with different climates and airborne particulate pollution levels. Séparation huile/eauIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Tremendous efforts have been exerted to develop effective and ecofriendly materials for separation of oil/water mixtures and emulsions. However, porous materials with superwettability for oil/water separation are usually fabricated from nonrenewable precursors, which contradicts with the concept of green development. Inspired by the cellular porosity and hierarchical organization of wood, biodegradable cut and sawed wood slices with different pore sizes were separately machined by a razor blade and a fine-toothed saw. The cut and sawed slices separately possessed rough single- and double-layer structures. After silylation with MTCS, both machined slices repelled water entirely but allowed the complete permeation of oils. The fragment-free cut slice with relatively large pore size was able to separate immiscible oil/water mixtures, while the fragment-covered sawed slice with relatively small pore size could separate water-in-oil emulsions. Compared with other wood slice by sawing, the section structure and superoleophilic property made the slices have a high oil flux for a series of mixtures and emulsions, which reached 72 kL m-2 h-1 and 464 L m-2 h-1, respectively. The flux was high even after 10 cycles, exhibiting favorable recyclable stability. Note de contenu : - Materials
