Fluoroethylene vinyl ether fluoropolymer resins Fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resins were developed in the early 1980s in an attempt to overcome some of the problems associated with conventional fluoropolymer coatings. These products have a unique polymer structure (fig. 1).
This polymer structure enables the fluorinated units, which have extremely high durability, to protect adjacent chemical bonds that are not as strong and, therefore, not as resistant to degradation by UV light. By making changes in the vinyl ether portion of the polymer, coating properties like solubility, transparency, hardness, flexibility, pigment compatibility, adhesion and gloss can be varied. In addition, the vinyl ether segments can be functionalised with hydroxyl groups to allow them to be reacted with aliphatic isocyanates to form fluoro-urethanes. These characteristics allow FEVE resins to be made in a range of forms, all offering outstanding weatherability. |
