The modern automobile is an electronic wonder filled with motors, wires, switches, sensors, solenoids and all manner of circuitry. Electrical and electronic systems provide the power to start up, monitor and control virtually every operating system and component on the vehicle.
The typical automobile has more than 4000 feet of copper electrical wire, 1300 electrical connections, between 200 and 300 electrical connectors and anywhere from 15 to 60 electrical motors. Overall electrical content has been increasing 7% annually throughout the 1990s and is expected to continue at that pace.
"Electrical problems are a leading cause of breakdowns and a major warranty cost for automakers," said Matt Donelan, automotive marketing manager for Loctite Corp., Rocky Hill, Conn.
For the past three decades Loctite has been a supplier of sealing, bonding and potting materials for automotive electrical systems. Primary applications include:
- Liquid silicone gaskets for electrical housings and components, providing rugged, high-temperature hermetic seals that are removable for servicing operations.
- Liquid resin impregnation of pin connectors, switches, capacitors and wiring harnesses through a proprietary vacuum sealing process called Flexseal. This systems seals microscopic leak paths with an anaerobic acrylic that also boosts electrical insulation properties (see case study). Flexseal protects a wide range of wiring harnesses and connectors, including those that control airbags and anti-lock brakes.
- High-performance compounds in cooling fans in radiators, entertainment systems, engine controllers and lighting applications.
"Nothing changing faster than automotive electrical systems", Donelan said, noting that Loctite is constantly testing materials for future applications. Among these are electrical motor armature balancing compounds and high-temperature, low outgassing potting compounds to prevent corrosion of electrical and electronic components. |
