A new family of pure acrylic binders has been designed to associate on to mineral particles present in a peint formulation, in particular Ti02 but also extenders, to space them optimally and offer a homogeneous peint film with superior exterior durability. Naturel exposure data in different climatic conditions confirm the benefits of this new binder technology, showing superior cheik resistance, gloss and colour retention and efflorescence resistance. The adsorption of these newly designed acrylic binders on to Ti02 pigment results, as well in a boost in hiding, which allows the paint formulator to reduce the pigment level and improve the sustainability profile of the paints. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : As a significant method to inhibit metal corrosion by blocking the diffusion of corrosive mediums to the metal surface, the anticorrosion coating with a self-healing function can actively repair a damaged structure and improve the anticorrosion performance to better meet actual needs. In this study, “external aid” and “intrinsic triggering” self-healing coatings have been introduced in detail, including the preparation method, healing mechanism and practical applications. The healing of “external aid” is based on the addition components such as microcapsules containing healing agents and functional nanoparticles, whose ability of self-healing shows the independence with the coating resin. But the finitely additive amount may limit the sustainable use of “external aid” components, and the abundant fillers also change the basic physical properties of the coating. On the contrary, the “intrinsic triggering” resins can form the cover layer in the defects owing to the physical or chemical reactions between the polymer chains, along with the unlimited cycles theoretically. By contrast, the small defects or gaps can be repaired gradually through chain reactions, but the large areas of damage may need the quick release of healing additives in “external aid” coating. In this review, the advances of two kinds of self-healing coatings were analyzed to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various healing technologies, and the challenges of development and prospects were also forecasted to provide useful ideas. Indoor air quality, including that of dwellings, has become a question of environmental health in the same way as has happened with control of outdoor air quality and exposure at work. The adverse effects due to poor air quality in closed spaces affect a considerable number of people, since it has been shown that urban dwellers spend between 58 and 78% of their time in an indoor environment which is contaminated and so there is an urgent need to improvise upon the indoor air and thus enhance its quality.
ln the following review, various advancements in coating industry to improve interior air quality are discussed in detail. The paper describes about the major contaminants of the indoor air pollution and how they affect the environment adversely. What are VOCs and how their emissions can be minimised to improve the interior air quality is also discussed. In addition to reduction of the emissions of VOCs special attention is paid to the technological advancennents such as formaldehyde abatement technology, encapsulation technology, ionic paint additive technology, anti-bacterial coatings, smoke and odor elimination coatings, air flow waterbome coatings, photocatalyst coating that remove and nninimize the already present indoorair contaminants and improve the interior air quality.Note de contenu : - Interior air quality

Produits antisolairesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : The organic ultraviolet UVB filter 2-ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC) was encapsulated in microparticles (MPs) of sodium alginate and co-loaded with vitamin E (Vit.E) by an extrusion process using an aerodynamically assisted jetting (AAJ) methodology. The aim was to assess the effect of encapsulation concerning UVB filter release from the MPs and its photochemical stability.
- Methods : The EHMC photostability was analysed by exposing the samples (both MPs in aqueous dispersion and incorporated in a cream preparation) during 1 h to simulated solar light. For the MPs (empty-MP, EHMC-MP and EHMC + Vit.E-MP), the morphology and size were characterized ; while in the case of the encapsulated samples, the amount of EHMC-loading was determined. The release of EHMC was evaluated by adding EHMC-MP or EHMC + Vit.E-MP to 65% ethanol in water under mechanical stirring at 32°C.
- Results : All MPs showed a homogeneous size distribution with a median of 90.5 ± 2.5 µm for EHMC-MP and 70.4 ± 1.14 µm for EHMC + Vit.E-MP. The encapsulation efficiency was 92.9% and 99.4% for EHMC-MP and EHMC + Vit.E-MP, respectively. The observed release from the MPs was lower than the dissolution of the pure UV filter. EHMC-MP and EHMC + Vit.E-MP were successfully incorporated into a cream formulation, with no evidence of phase separation or colour modification. Upon simulated light exposure, the photoisomerization/phototransformation of EHMC encapsulated in MPs and Vit.E-MP decreased as compared to free EHMC, both in aqueous dispersion and as a cream. The conformational ratio of the isomers (Z-/E-EHMC) was found to be the lowest in the presence of Vit.E.
- Conclusion : This work demonstrates that use of these alginate microparticulate carriers could enhance the effectiveness of sunscreen preparations containing this UVB filter.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : materials - Microparticles production - Microparticles freeze drying - EHMC assay - Microparticles characterization - Cream preparation - Photostability - Statistical analysis

Bio-based insect repellent agent citronella oil was encapsulated with ethyl cellulose shell with coacervation method. Morphological assessment showed that capsules had smooth surfaces and their shape was spherical. The homogenous size distribution of the capsules was supported and the mean particle size of the optimum formulations was almost 50 μm. Outdoor upholstery fabrics were treated with citronella capsules by coating and printing to compare the application methods. After application, the insecticide effects of the fabrics were investigated and compared with the impregnation method. Insecticide activity was evaluated against common house mosquitoes (Culex pipiens), with respect to cone bioassay of World Health Organization. Mosquitoes tended to stay away from treated fabrics, and mortality rates of mosquitos were noted as 72, 65 and 55% for printing, coating and impregnation, respectively, and the fabrics still showed repellency after five washing cycles. This study showed that the developed product might be used as an alternative to the other products in the market for avoiding mosquito-borne diseases and these results showed that capsules can be transferred by printing and coating processes when compared with the impregnation method.
