Corrosion is generally an electrochemical process ; electrochemical measurements can provide a great deal of information on rate and mechanism of corrosion. This study focuses on the evaluation of corrosion protection performance of cathodic electrodeposition paint (hereafter referred to as CED paint) on freshly phosphated mild steel substrate by Open Circuit Potential (OCP) and Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP) test using 5% sodium chloride solution. Intent of this study to understand correlation between electrochemical measurement results and accelerated corrosion test performance. For this study, set of three CED paint samples labeled as, fresh CED paint sample denoted as CED bath A, bacteria contaminated CED paint sample denoted CED bath B and biocide treated CED paint sample denoted as CED bath C were applied through electrophoretic application on freshly phosphated mild steels coupons and Panels. Electrocoat film build of 20 microns (p) and 10 microns (p) was chosen for corrosion study. On the basis of results obtained through electrochemical measurement and accelerated corrosion performance study, it was observed that corrosion performance of electrodeposition bath deteriorates due to microbial contamination also ; electrochemical measurement technique can be used as analytical tool to detect corrosion performance behaviour of contaminated electrodeposition bath material. |
