Résumé : |
Where today's coatings are concerned, the demand for enhanced scratch and wear resistance is constantly increasing. The idea of an everlasting surface that keeps its properties unchanged has become the driving force for ongoing research in this field. This is not only due to increased decorative requirements from customers but also to the fact that the extended service life of a coating contributes directly to its sustainability. This effect is even more important since it is not yet possible to recycle coatings. Beside optical properties, the customers for architectural and decorative coatings focus on coating characteristics such as low VOC, environmental friendliness and toxicological aspects. In this context, several attempts have been made to reduce the amount of solvents involved and to change over to cobalt-free siccatives for the production of alkyd-based coating systems. With regard to the latter, upcoming European regulation is expected to force coating producers to switch to cobalt-free siccatives in the near future. There are several alternatives available but in some cases the cobalt-free dried systems offer lower hardness and worse scratch resistance, compared to the cobalt-dried systems. To overcome this situation, we have developed a new additive based on surface treated boehmite nano-particles to improve the scratch resistance of both cobalt-free and cobalt-containing alkyd systems. |
