Well-known effect pigments are plate-like particles, which are either metallic flakes or pearlescent pigments. Metallic flakes are predominantly made of aluminium, which reflect light to a very high extent, thus leading to brightly shining silver colour effects with a noticeable hiding power. In contrast to the metallic pigments, pearlescent pigments are composite materials, based on platelet substrates, which are typically coated with one or more additional metal oxide layers. Their effect as pearl lustre pigments originates from an interference phenomenon and their colour is determined by the refractive index and thickness of the precipitated metal oxide layer.
Typically, these effect pigments are not considered as functional pigments, even though they split the incident, white light into a portion of the reflected, interference colour and the transmitted, complementary colour. However, if the understanding of functionality could be expanded beyond the pure technological purposes towards meeting all expectations, the often-decisive impact of our emotions becomes part of the game. "All men are equal, they are individuals". As such, effect pigments draw our interest to attractively coated objects. Their function is to creat new desires and to fulfil our wishes. Sparkling and colourful, maybe even colour changing pearlescent pigments have successfully kept their promises and become famous for their outstanding properties.Note de contenu : - Traditional use
