Résumé : |
It has become impossible to acquire the standard filter candles specified by the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists and therefore an alternative method for the filtration of tannin extract solutions for analysis is required urgently.
A number of considerations have to be borne in mind when assessing an alternative method of filtration, among which the following are probably the most important :
1. Results of the new method should agree as closely as possible with those of the presently accepted method.
2. The new method should give consistently repeatable results.
3. It should be simple and rapid to perform.
4. The cost should be low.
We have been informed by (to our knowledge) the sole manufacturer of filter candles with the required characteristics, that they have ceased production because of insufficient demand. The method of filtration described below, therefore, has been adopted at the Wattle Research Institute of the University of Natal.
