Résumé : |
Corrosion is the main problem due to which automotive exhaust components have a Iimited life particularly in the exhaust mufflers and silencers. The effect of surface crystallised aluminium coating followed by powder coating on the corrosion performance is investigated in this research. Investigation is done for various temperatures of surface crystallisation at 200°C, 250 °C, 300°C, 350 °C and 400 °C. Exhaust mufflers are subjected to aggressive environments like marine, heavily polluted industrial atmosphere. Therefore in the present study the coated mufflers are exposed to salt spray environment. To evaluate corrosion behaviour after salt spray test electrochemical test, polarisation tests are performed. The results from experiment revealed that the untreated aluminium coating is fesser protective in nature than surface crystallised aluminium at higher temperatures of 300 °C, 350 °C and 400 °C followed by powder coating in which the high-density grain boundaries promote atomic migration and thus accelerates passivation or the formation of a protective Al oxide film to block further corrosion reaction. Surface crystallised aluminised powder coating withstands for 1000 hrs in salt spray after which it forms red rust and untreated aluminised samples for 240 hrs only. The protectiveness in terms of time of red rust formation and barrier protection was increased with increasing crystallising temperature. |
