Résumé : |
From cave paintings of the 6th and 7th Centuries, through to the European Renaissance Period and beyond, we have evidence that artists have lOng cherished and employed natural ultramarine as a pigment. However, prohibitively rare and expensive as a raw material, it was always extremely difficult to extract the dazzling blue pigment, even when a relatively successful method was eventually discovered. Not until the 19th Century, when chemists cracked the problem of manufacturing ultramarine synthetically, did ultramarine blue reach the palettes of professional and amateur painters. Synthetic ultramarine now matches natural ultramtarine in terms of chemical composition, structure, hue and performance. |
