The chemical modification of liquid epoxy polymer with bisphenol-A was carried out. The water soluble epoxy polymers were made from phthalic anhydride, phthalic-anhydride and trimellitic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and maleopimaric acid and maleopimaric acid alone, separately by using chemical modified epoxy polymer prepared earlier. The pigmentation of water soluble epoxy polymer based on phthalic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and trimellitic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and maleopimaric acid, -and maleopimaric acid alone was done using red oxide and zinc phosphate. The methylated melamine formaldehyde polymer was prepared and used as curing agent. Thereafter, electrodepositable pigmented coating compositions were prepared and they were studied for different mechanical and chemical film properties after electrodeposition. For comparison purpose, two other water soluble alkyds were also prepared from trimellitic anhydride and phthalic anhydride combination, and phthalic anhydride alone, separately. Water soluble pigmented coating compositions were prepared from these watersoluble alkyds using water soluble methylated melamine formaldehyde resin as curing agent and TiO2 as pigment. The coating compositions were cured by heating at 160°C for 30 minutes. The film properties of all three pigmented coatings were determined and compared. It was observed that the overall mechanical and chemical properties of the films of coating based on water soluble alkyd made from maleopimaric acid and phthalic anhydride combination were superior over the films of coatings based on trimellitic anhydride and phthalic anhydride combinations, and phthalic anhydride alone. The films of coating based on phthalic anhydride alone gave comparatively poor mechanical and chemical film characteristics. The used epoxy-amine adduct was synthesized from epoxy resin and diethanol amine in molar ratio 1:1. The pigmented coating compositions for cathodic electrodeposition were prepared by using different esterified epoxy-amine adducts with linseed fatty acids, separately. Film properties of cathodic electrodeposited coating compositions were studied and it was found that the coating compositions having 10% and 15% esterified epoxy- amine adducts showed good film properties. Water soluble epoxy resins were synthesised from epoxy resin and maleopimaric acid using different weight ratio. There after, pigmented coating compositions were prepared using water soluble epoxy resins and titanium dioxide as pigment. These coating compositions were characterised and evaluated for mechanical and chemical film properties. The results show that all the coating compositions had good film properties and they may be used as industrial coatings.
