It aims at exposing the formulation requirements of certain acrylic resin binder suitable for leather finishing applications. The materials are presented in a manner to benefit both the students studying leather science and technology or leather engineering in tertiary institutions as well as those in the leather industry whose knowledge in this technology is deficient. Students of polymer science and technology will also appreciate the contents of this book as it tries to study the effect acrylic polymer resin in the performance of finished leathers. This book will assist mostly undergraduates in understanding the processes of leather making, formulation of finishing agents, properties and behavior of finished leather. It will also benefit those with little or no technical background in leather processes as well as those who have sophisticated background in science but no experience in the leather industry. Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A series of wool keratin/hydroxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMCNa/glyoxal composite membranes were prepared via solution blending and cross linking modification technology. The optimization of composite films preparation was critically investigated via orthogonal experimental design. Experimental results indicated that the cross-linking agent had a greater effect on the mechanical properties of films. Under the optimal condition (keratin/CMCNa weight ratio : 5.5, 0.3% glyoxal, reaction time : 1h, reaction temperature: 37°C), the composite membrane showed good tensile strength and maximum elongation, which can be used as film-forming agent in leather finishing. Moreover, in contrast to casein, the application properties of the leather finished by modified keratin composite film were measured : tensile strength increased by 11.3%, elongation at break improved by 25.7% as well as water vapour permeability by 3.76 %, and wet rub resistance fastness improved from 3 to 4. However, air permeability decreased by 15.1%. SEM and FTIR analysis verified that it has good compatibility, strong hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds formed between cross-linking agent and raw material molecules. The product might be great potentiel for application in leather finishing as film-forming agent instead of casein. Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : An acrylic resin and an acrylic-resin/nano-SiO2 composite prepared as coating agents were applied in leather finishing and various properties of the finished leathers were determined. The results show that the physicalmechanical properties and cleaning properties of the leather samples finished with the acrylic-resin/nano-SiO2 composite increase noticeably. As examples, water vapour penetration and air permeability improved by 11.5% and 15.4%, dry rub fastness and folding strength [flexing] of the leather finished with the composite resin were also, to a degree, superior to that finished by the acrylic resin. The surface morphology observed by SEM (scanning electron microscope-energy spectrum of X-ray analysis) and AFM (atomic force microscope) indicated that the surface of the leather finished with the composite resin is smoother than that of leathers finished with the acrylic resin. Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : There is growing interest in the water-vapour permeability of exterior wood coatings as a performance specification to help predict moisture transfer. Buildings are increasingly more airtight and better insulated which makes it important to assess the risk of internal condensation. Current test methods to measure the water-vapour permeability of coatings are not a good fit for wood coatings. A new wet cup test method could be the solution. Note de contenu : - Experimental

Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : For decades, polymer technology has provided the civil engineering sector with high performance flooring systems. Waterborne epoxy primers are well described for delivering excellent adhesion to concrete substrates and for providing unique water vapour permeable flooring solutions. Solvent-free epoxy floorings, on the other hand, promote both increased mechanical and chemical protection to concrete substrates, allowing for enhanced durability. In the topcoat and sealer applications, 2-pack polyurethanes have built a reputation, in particular where satin finishes in combination with durability against UV light and high wear resistance, are desired.
Novel flooring technologies are presented in this paper that address industry performance short-falls and demand for fast return, with reduced environmental impact. The use of high performance, rapid return epoxy primers in conjunction with aliphatic polyamine-cured isocyanate topcoats delivered to the end-user a novel combination of performance properties.
Individual features such as clean air (or emission compliance) are no longer sufficient and often considered 'must-have'. The additional synergy is found when combining polymer technologies to a 'system approach' in which each technology component delivers added value to architect, applicator and end-user. A combination of broad formulation latitude ; fast property development at both ambient and low temperatures ; and high mechanical and chemical integrity are demonstrated, which result in polymer floorings with excellent properties well-suited for use in civil engineering, protective coating and structural adhesive applications.Note de contenu : - Primer application to concrete - adhesion and fast walk-on
