There are a variety of organic esters of cellulose, among which the cellulose acetates (CAs), cellulose acetate propionates (CAPs) and cellulose acetate butyrates (CABs) are some of the better known. These esters are utilized in varied and numerous applications, like the fabrication of photographic film, plastics, filters and coatings. In the following paragraphs, we will describe the cellulose acetate butyrates (CABs), emphasizing their use in original and refinish automotive coatings. CABs are produced through the esterification of cellulose (obtained from cotton or wood pulp) with the appropriate organic anhydrides and acids and catalysts. The result is a modest products line, come of which, along with certain physicochemical properties and characteristics are shown in table 1. CABs have varied compositions and properties, which are indicated by the name or designation for each². |
