Solvents from coatings accouts for over 10% of total quantity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which contribute to production of low level ozone, photo-chemical smog and health hazards. It is estimated that reductions of upto 50% in solvent emissions and required to reduce risks to human health . This, together with concerns over health and safety of workers, odour restriction, rising costs and short supply of petrochemicals, government legislations ( US clean air act of 1977 , Germany federal emission law of 1974 ) , awareness of protecting the environment effectively forced paint makers to reduce the use of solvents that emit VOC. |
