Mankind has used renewable raw materials as starting materials for chemicals sincde historic times. Especially, for manufacturing of printing inks air-drying oils have been used very often. Even Johan Gutenberg's printing inks have been blends of air-drying oils and natural resins. With the development of the chemical industry parallel the diversification of printing technologies, more and more synthetic, petro-chemical products have been used in the formulation of printing inks. organic pigments petro-chemical resins and petrochemical solvents have been developed to satisfy the demands of modern inks and progressive printing technologies. Recently, improved environmental concerns and the fact that petrochemical resources are limited raised the use of renewable raw materials in many fields of application. |
