Castor oil was allowed to react with anhydride to yield a secondary half ester, which upon further esterification with polyol and polyacids gave superior quality alkyd resins, which can find large applications in cost effective high performance industrial coatings. The molecular weights of the alkyds prepared by the acylation process, MG process and fatty acid process were recorded. Various anhydrides such as phthalic, tetrahydro phthalic and hexahydro phthalic were compared for the degree of acylation. The mechanical and chemical properties of the white enamel based on the alkyd resin prepared by the acylation technique was compared with that of alkyd resin based on the MG route and the fatty acid route having the same oil length, molecular weight and hydroxyl value.
