Résumé : |
Three clinical studies have associated employment in the leather and leather products industries with cancer, but they have not identified tanning and finishing operations specifically. The dust that is characteristically created in the manufacture of leather goods is most often suggested as a significant factor. However, many of the chemicals used in the leather tanning industry are classified as carcinogenic. An analysis of the potential risks of exposure to these chemicals is presented in this paper, along with suggestions for proper practices of handling them. The classes of materials are nitrosamines, benzidine-based direct dyestuffs, chromate pigments, aromatic organic solvents, and tannins. |
