The industry is aware that a hide yields more byproducts than finished leather. Collagen is the source of both the leather and the byproducts. Faced with environmental regulations and a grim economic picture, the innovative tanner, if he is to secure a position for himself in the marketplace, must do more with these byproducts to enhance his financial return from them and to ease waste generation.
A review of limed collagen generators, nonleather uses of collagen, and the available potential growth of these uses will indicate where development efforts should be placed. |
