Résumé : |
The leather tanning and finishing industry has been classified by Federal and State regulatory agencies as a generator of potentially hazardous waste. An engineering recommendation was made that the chrome-laden solids resulting from tannery operations could be properly managed by incinerating these wastes to an ash containing soluble chrome. A process was needed for extracting the chrome in the ash and recycling it to the tanning process. This paper presents a chromium recovery and reuse process that stabilizes the ash resulting from a thermal treatment system by removing all the soluble chrome, as well as a tannery waste water treatment process that provides for very efficient primary treatment. This recovery process recycles all the chromium in liquid and solid tannery waste and therefore provides for a "zero" chrome discharge to the environment. |
