Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) recently developed novel alkoxysilane-terminated N-substituted urea polymers for use in moisture-curable, single-component (1K) polysiloxane topcoats for military assets. These polymers demonstrate similar mechanical properties and chemical resistance to polyurethanes, yet do not contain harmful isocyanates. The polymers can be synthesized in a variety of polar and aromatic solvents to provide low viscosity solutions, thus allowing for the generation of topcoats that are free of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and contain low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These polymers have been primarily utilized to formulate 1K polysiloxane topcoats for use on the exterior of Navy surface ships and aircraft, yet they are applicable to a variety of non-military markets where exterior durable topcoats are required.
For Navy ships, the 1K polysiloxane topcoat is designed as a haze gray colored system that is <250 g/l VOCs, provides a semi-gloss finish once cured, will adhere to high solids epoxy primers, and offers enhanced weatherability and hydrocarbon resistance compared to legacy Navy topcoats. The coating can be brush- and roll-applied by sailors for touchup/repair applications or spray-applied by contractors during depot-level maintenance. For Navy aircraft, the 1K topcoat is designed as a camouflage gray colored system that is <300 g/l VOCs, is spray-applied via high-volume low-pressure (HVLP) equipment, provides a low-gloss finish once cured, and demonstrates comparable flexibility, weatherability, and hydrocarbon resistance to qualified polyurethane topcoats. Gloss topcoats for Navy aircraft have also been formulated using these novel polymers. Laboratory testing of these 1K polysiloxane topcoats to military specifications (MIL-Specs.) and demonstrations on military assets will be discussed herein.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Legacy surface ship and aircraft topcoats

Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In 2015, the breakthrough of a novel blocked catalyst and kinetic control additive package used in conjunction with Michael Addition chemistry was announced at the European Coating Conference. Prototype paint formulae highlight the very fast drying 2K system (<15 min, ambient) and the unique de-coupling of dry time and pot life (>5 h), expected to trigger new paint and process solutions. The fast-cure system was designed as a topcoat over epoxy primers for use in the industrial market. The advantages of fast cure, long pot life, and low- to no-baking were described at other conferences since the introduction. However, most factory-applied systems do not fully make use of these advantages.
Air-dry-only applications fully use the advantages of this new technology. Furthermore, the base-catalyzed system is a natural consideration for use over alkaline surfaces such as concrete. Very low-VOC/air-dried coatings can be made using reactive diluents, which can reduce paint viscosity, but also greatly increase the crosslink density. There are also available low-viscosity crosslinkers, which reduce the viscosity of the paint, yield good paint properties, and have excellent appearance. This article shows the low-VOC potential while the fast-dry nature allows fast return-to-service for flooring and other applications.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Controlling pot life and drying - Formulating for low-VOC paints

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Industrial wood surfaces, such as furniture and cabinetry, require coatings to help protect and extend their life. Polyurethane coatings provide enhanced appearance, stain and chemical resistance, as well as exterior durability. When formulated as ambient cure systems, traditional two-component polyurethanes typically must balance cure speed for pot life. This article describes clearcoat formulations using a novel nonisocyanate polyurethane technology based on the reaction of a polycarbamate with polyaldehydes. A major benefit of this system is the ability to decouple pot life and cure speed without adversely affecting fast hardness development and quick dry time. For the end user, this can lead to faster return to service and higher production rates. Additional coating benefits are high clarity, excellent durability and chemical resistance, and fast sandability. Reducing VOC is a major need for the applicator, and different approaches are presented aimed at reducing the VOC of a clear formulation for wood, which can maintain a useful pot life while retaining its fast cure and dry properties. An example is shown where a clear formulation is modified to meet the requirements of the Utah VOC Rule R307-343 Emission Standards for Wood Furniture Manufacturing Operations for acid-cure alkyd amino topcoats (1.0 lb solvent per lb of solid), which was chosen for its relatively higher VOC restriction. This is a traditional solventborne technology, and the current carbamate resin, which is in n-butyl acetate at 67% solids, can be formulated using exempt solvents as low as 450 g/L just meeting this standard. To reach more stringent VOC regulation targets below 450 g/L would require producing the carbamate resin dispersed in a VOC-exempt solvent.
