Résumé : |
After an introduction on the impact of the tanning industry on the natural environment (especially its toxic effect) this lecture discusses the interaction between the mass and energy balances in the industry. The results of the last ten years of studies performed in the Centre Technique du Cuir allow these two balances to be improved by :
- Direct recycling of liming and chromium tanning floats
- Recovery of keratinous protein by ultrafiltration
- Recovery of fats and collagenous protein from fleshings
- Production of new man-made materials from tanned wastes
- Production of collagen derivatives from splits and trimmings for cosmetic and medical use
- Energy savings by heat-pump-type dryers.
All of these low-waste technologies and solid wastes valorization processes are now used under full-scale industrial conditions. They lower the production load on environment, reduce cost of treating the residual pollution, and improve the public image of the tanning industry, without affecting leather quality. |
