Leather is a material that is renowned for its longevity. Many consumers pride themselves in owning a leather article that lasts the majority of their life and may even be handed down to the next generation. Some familles boast of a leather artefact which is so old that no-one would dare use it for its intended purpose, but it occupies a rightful place as a family heirloom. Notable heirlooms eventually make their way to museum collections and are preserved for posterity.
Companies such as Churches, Mulberry and Dr Martens have looked at longevity models and developed remanufacture or renovation schemes that look to prolong the longevity of their products. On March 23, 2023, the European Union published a draft of its right to repair directive. This legislation, if successful, will force producers to engage with consumers who are looking to repair or renovate their products, with penalties if a consumer demands this service and a European producer has no provision for it. The provision is envisaged to be direct or through a third party, with available spare parts or a design which allows repairability. |
