Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : New generation fighter class aero-engines are dictated by the higher thrust requirement and lower specific fuel consumption, thereby increasing the turbine entry temperature and going towards higher strength to weight ratio materials for compressors. As there is a limit for the high temperature capability of the material, the same is improved by adopting different types of thermal barrier coatings. The major modes of failure of cold end components are high cycle fatigue and stress corrosion, while that for hot end components are low cycle fatigue, thermal fatigue and hot corrosion, etc. Various modes of failure of different components impose complex requirements on the designer for material selection. Apart from this, major failure like fatigue and corrosion starts from the surface. Because of the higher thrust and greater revolution of rotating components and the gyroscopic loads, there is considerable wear and tear and vibration during exploitation, increasing the premature withdrawals to an alarming situation. This paper deals with the various advanced coatings that are applied to the different components of a typical new generation fighter class aero engine for I) Design up-gradation, ii) Ease of maintenance, iii) Improving the reliability of operation.
