It has several advantages over conventional paint application methods, the most important one being the control of pollution, since water is the main solvent used in the process in place of toxic organic solvents. Both anodic and cathodic processes have been developed, but the latter has clear cut advantages over the former, because, in cathodic process, the substrate dissolution can be avoided, which helps in eliminating the threat of coating discoloration and also the bath instability. Epoxy resins are well known for their corrosion protective properties. In the present work, water soluble epoxy resin is prepared by modifying with amine for getting cathodic systems. The resin, on dissolution in water by adding organic acids, could be cathodically deposited. The studies made with the cathodic epoxy resin with and without pigmentation and also the evaluation of the electrocoating are detailed in this paper. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Maintenance coating systems viz. vinyl, epoxy - polyurethane and polyurethane were coated on wire brushed steel surface and exposed at Chennai naval base for 18 months and in a salt spray chamber for 720 hrs. After this duration, the panels were removed and subjected to impedance measurement studies in 0.5 M sodium chloride solution. The photographs of salt spray chamber exposed panels and those exposed in atmosphere indicate that the latter gets highly corroded when compared to the panels in the salt spray chamber. This is mainly due to the atmospheric corrodant present in the air in addition to the marine environment. The AC impedance measurement shows that the vinyl and epoxy-polyurethane coating system exhibited 109 ohm-cm2 resistance even after 720 hrs salt spray and a 18 month exposure at the navel base. But the resistance produced by the polyurethane system is in the order of 106 ohm-cm2 and 104 ohm.cm2, which shows comparatively poor protective property of this system. This study indicates that better correlation is possible between exposure studies and the electrochemical methods of evaluating the coating systems. The studies further conclude that vinyl and epoxy-polyurethane coating systems can be used as maintenance coating system for steel structures at the navel base environment in Chennai. Nickel flake pigments show a slight advantage over shperical pigments by achieving conductivity through particle-to-particle contact at much lower pigment loading percentages. Similarly, for a conductive nickel flake coating system to protect the metals from different environments relies upon the resin system in the composition. The technology has now developed to a full fledged one which is used especially for primer application. But it can also be used as one coat finish where such coatings find application. Both anodic and cathodic systems have been developed and even now both are being used taking into consideration the essential properties of the coating that is to be pressed into service. For this purpose several resin systems are used and depending on the properties required the system can be chosen. Epoxy resins are well known for their corrosion protective properties. They are widely used as primers due to their good protective action against marine and alkaline environment. It offers sufficiently good protection against acid also though not as good as that against alkali. The author in this paper has described some of the experiences with the epoxy ester resin deposition over steel from aqueous bath especially regarding the bath characteristics and some of the properties of the coatings. However the cost of the imported raw materials make them for selective use in controlling marine and industrial corrosion of steel structures. In this present study an attempt is made to develop a coating material with good weather resistance as well as corrosion resistance. An epoxy resin cured with different ratios of aliphatic polyisocyanate was evaluated for its weather and corrosion resistance nature by conventional methods. The developed resin system was used to formulate a paint i.e. top coat and its performance was compared with the conventional epoxy polyamide paint and a conventional polyurethane paint. It was concluded that by reacting epoxy resin with aliphatic isocyanate one can get a cost effective, better performing top coat, which can be a good replacement for conventional aliphatic polyurethane topcoats.
