In this work an attempt has been made to prepare exotic leathers from the bovine ear, which is a solid waste from the slaughterhouse. Ears are the peculiar part of bovine, where a flexible cartilage (Type II collagen) is covered by the skin matrix (Type I collagen). The process for the preparation of the leathers from bovine ears has been optimized. The physical and morphological characteristics of the leathers have been carried out. The air permeability analysis revealed that the air permeability decreased with increase in the cartilage thickness. The processed ear possessed high resistance towards stitch tear and abrasion. The attractive reversible grain pattern along with genuine leather property provides an opportunity to utilize this material as a new source of raw material for leather making. The storage and corresponding evolution of the sludge has not yet focalized the attention of the scientific community. Apart from developing knowledge of the ecology and function of the microbial community in anaerobic digestion processes, it is necessary to control this biological process. The manipulation of strict anaerobic microorganisms is the limiting factor in their isolation due to their high sensitivity to oxygen; therefore, cultivation under anaerobic conditions is essential. This work presents an evaluation of biogas generation and quality. In addition, microbial biodegradation is carried out in bench bioreactors containing two main solid wastes from tanneries: wet-blue shavings and sludge from a tannery wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). We analyzed two storage conditions of the sludge: storage under ambient conditions and under refrigeration. Sludge kept at ambient conditions showed a significantly higher methane production; methane was only detected in vials containing high concentrations of microorganisms. The manipulation of microorganisms did not interrupt biodegradation. The isolation technique with vials proved to be appropriate for the quantification of methanogenic microorganisms in biodegradation tests, although it was not fully elucidated for their isolation. PolyuréthanesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : o overcome the leaching problem associated with low-molecular-weight antimicrobial agents, a water soluble antimicrobial polymer, poly(N-acryloyl ciprofloxacin-co-acrylic acid), was designed and synthesized via acryloylation of the secondary amine in 7-piperazinyl substituent of ciprofloxacin and subsequent copolymerization with acrylic acid. The structure of the copolymer was characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The copolymer was compatible with waterborne polyurethane for leather finishing, and remained antimicrobial even though the parent structure of ciprofloxacin molecule was altered. When incorporated into waterborne polyurethane leather coating as an antimicrobial agent, poly(N-acryloyl ciprofloxacin-co-acrylic acid) proved seldom leached out from the coating even after being rinsed for ten times. Based on these results, the water soluble antimicrobial copolymer designed in this study may prevent depletion of antimicrobial function of waterborne polyurethane leather coating, extending the lifetime of the leather products and enhancing their hygiene properties. Tannage Résumé : The current investigation was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of using sunt, Acacia nilotica, pods extract in leather tanning. Skins from 16 Barki rams aged 12-18 months were cured and prepared for tanning using sunt pod extract. The sunt pods were collected and dried at 25°C for 5 days. Thereafter, the dried pods were ground by a 0.3 mm fineness grinder and were further subjected to the extraction procedure. Three chemical additives, namely NaOH, Na2SO3 and Na2CO3 were used for the extraction at 70 and 90°C. The influences of both types of chemical additive and extraction temperature on extraction yield were determined. The extract characteristics in terms of stiasny number, hide powder, tannins, non-tannins and total phenol contents were also analyzed. The results showed that increasing extraction temperature increased (P<0.05) extraction yield and improved the quality of the extract regardless of chemical additive type. Meanwhile, the extraction using either Na2SO3 in aqueous solution or by water at 90°C yielded the best extract characteristics. The elevated concentrations of condensed and hydrolysable tannins obtained in our results point to the possibility of utilizing sunt pod extract in tanning or re-tanning of leather rather than using traditional tanning reagents.
