Heavy metals pollutants are of great environmental concern as they are non-degradable and therefore remains persistent in the environment. Since heavy metals are a non renewable, finite natural resource the challenge is not limited only to their removal from the water strams but also to finding efficient and economical ways of recovery and recycling one of the major sources of heavy metal pollution are electroplating, pigment producing, metal finishing, printed circuit board manufacturing, etc. When such waste water emanating from industries are released into rivers or other natural water bodies, they prove to be harmful to the flora and fauna due to the presence of metals like lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc, silver, etc. While passing along the food chain, these metals get bioaccumulated in small aquatic organisms and finally reach humans by the process of biomagnfication. Toxicity data for various metallic pollutants is shown. Note de contenu : - Advantages of biosorption over conventional methods of metal removal
- Mechanism of metal removal by microorganisms
- Ideal biosorbents
- Desorption and reuse of biosorbents
- Metal biosorption technologies
- Factors affecting metal biosorption
- Technological aspects of biosorption process
- Economics of biosorption process
- Status and future biosorbent technology
