Résumé : |
Matting agents are widely used additives to reduce the gloss in a variety of coatings applications. In this article three types of new matting agents are discussed. High pore volume-matting agents for conventional solvent borne lacquers, matting of UV-cured systems and gloss control additives for thermosetting powder coatings. The efficiency of matting agents in conventional solvent borne lacquers depends on factors such as, type of silica, particle size distribution and porosity of particle. Here the influence of high porosity silica gels on matting efficiency and rheology in 2 pack polyurethane, waterborne polyurethane, alkyd, and polyester melamine system, is discussed. Matting efficiency differences and influence on viscosity depends, not only on porosity but also on particle size distribution, organic treatment and on the coatings formulation. Creating matte effects in traditional coatings presents no great technical problems, since adequate film shrinkage results from evaporation of volatile components. It is proposed to discuss the matting of modern coatings, like the emerging market of UV-cured lacquers and thermosetting powder coatings, which undergo minimal or no shrinkage during film formation. The study on UV cured coatings is based on the use of Design of Experiments and 6-Sigma Tools, to investigate the correlation of UV-formulation and lacquer properties, beside the known effects of matting agent on film and lacquer properties. The matting of powder coatings as induced by novel reactive matting agents will be outlined in terms of changes in rheological properties and in terms of changes in surface profile statistics that take place during film formation. Attention to the influence of gloss level on other film properties will be given. |
