Historical study shows that adhesive joining is one of the older techniques. Adhesives were not seriously considered as structural bonding agents for long time. In the last couple of decades, adhesives in a variety of forms have replaced the use of screws, rivets, welds, nails, pegs, bolts, trads, clamping, soldering and brazing in many fields.
"Adhesive is defined as non metallic materials i.e. capable of joining bodies together by surface adhesion and internal strength (adhesion and cohesion) without the structure of bodies undergoing significant changes. "The process of joining the two or more surface is known as adhesion.
The substances loosely covered by thi definition of adhesive are cements, glue, paste, gums, sealants bonding agent. The basic function of an adhesive is to fasten the components of an assembly together and maintain the joined parts under the service conditions but the two parts can be bonded by other method also. The adhesives for bonding assumes the process is fast, easy and economical.
An ideal adhesives should have maximum mechanical strength of bond, minimum setting time or quick development of bond strength, ease and rapidity of application, resistsance to moisture, ability to withstand temperature, produce a flexible bond, resistance to deterioration by aging, should be chemically inert to the adherands and should have free from objectionable odour, fire and toxicity hazards.
An adhesive is composed of basic raw materials which are called binders and which determines its adhesiveness (adhesion) and its internal strength (cohesion) and of frequently necessary auxiliaries which establish particular end use and processing characteristics. The adhesiveness of an adhesive, its processing characteristic are the fundamental properties that determine its suitability for use in forming adhesive joint. The binders used for adhesives are primarily high polymers having optimal strength properties.Note de contenu : - MAIN COMPONENTS OF ADHESIVES
