However, the relationship between the hydrophilicity of retanning agents and the heat resistance of leather and the corresponding mechanism remain unclear. Herein, phenolic formaldehyde syntans (PFSs) were selected as models to explore the effect of the hydrophilicity of retanning agents on the thermal stability of retanned leather. The thermal stability of leather was closely correlated to the hydrophilic group content (sulfonation degree) of PFSs. As the sulfonation degree increased, the water absorption rate of PFSs and their retanned leathers decreased, whereas the thermal stability of leather increased. Molecular dynamics simulation results proved that the introduction of PFSs could reduce the binding ability of collagen molecules with water and thus decreased the water molecules around the PFS-treated collagen. These results may provide guidance for the tanners to select retanning agents reasonably to improve the thermal stability of leather. RetannageIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Amino resins have played an important role in the manufacture of leather due to their outstanding filling and dyeing properties. However, a traditionally prepared amino resin usually contains free formaldehyde, which is strictly restricted in leather products. With increasing awareness of potential health problems with formaldehyde, there is a growing demand for formaldehyde-free leathers in the global leather market. In this study, a formaldehyde-free amino resin was synthesized by using glyoxal as condensing agent, and its retanning properties were investigated. It was found that the glyoxal can be used to replace formaldehyde to synthesize an amino resin, and the optimal reaction conditions were that the molar ratio of melamine to glyoxal was 1:6, reaction temperature was 333K and reaction time was 3 hours.
Retanning experiments with the prepared amino resin indicated that its retanning properties, including fullness, softness, general appearance of the leather and mechanical strength, are better or equal to those that of a traditionally prepared amino resin.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Materials - Preparation of MG - Characterization of MG - FTIR analysis

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Combination tanning using vegetable tannins and oxazolidine E has been proved to be preferred alternative to chrome tanning. But this kind of tannage has not been widely applied partly owing to the high price of oxazolidine E. In this study, a new oxazolidine tanning agent, Oxazolidine SCU, was synthesized by using cheap and readily obtained raw materials, and its tanning properties both alone and in combination with vegetable tannins, were investigated. Oxazolidine SCU possesses high reactivity with skin collagen. Tanned by 5 % oxazolidine SCU under room temperature at pH8.0, the shrinkage temperature of goatskin leather was around 83°C. In vegetable combination tanning, oxazolidine SCU exhibited a good synergistic tanning effect with condensed tannins. Among condensed tannins, mimosa is the preferred one in consideration of achieving high shrinkage temperature of leather. Tanning the depickled pelt with 10-15 % vegetable tannin at first, and then retanning with 4-6 % oxazolidine SCU for 4 hours at 60°C in the pH range 5.5-6.0, the shrinkage temperature of leather was 114-120°C.
