Résumé : |
In the ever increasingly competitive construction industry, cost savings and shortening of construction periods is placing increasing pressure on all concerned with steel fabrication. These pressures to save time and money are most apparent in the currently favoured climate of Design and Build contracts. It is an unfortunate fact that in any cost saving exercise corrosion protection is always first to be targeted.
This may be understandable in some instances where inappropriate overspecification has occured but in many others it is not and results in underspecification. Neither situation is desirable ; in the case of overspecification the long term competitiveness of steel construction will be questioned. In the second case poor service performance will, in the long term, lead clients to move away from steel construction.
In order to avoid this, industry as a whole needs to change its attitude to coating specifications. The professional teams, representing the client interests, need to rationalise specifications and recognise that coatings are not always necessary, but where they are they should be correctly specified. The contracting side of industry needs to recognise that coatings represent added value and are not just a necessary evil. They also need to acknowledge that the use of cheap, low quality products is a short term, false economy.
This paper will consider the needs of all interested parties, from the steel producer through to the end client, and argue for a rationalised approach to coating specifications that recognise the importance of high quality materials and applications in producing an added value products. |
