Engineers involved in the selection of coatings for industrial maintenance applications have long relied on a three-coat system consisting of a zinc-rich primer, epoxy basecoat and a polyurethane topcoat. The primer and basecoat provide corrosion protection, while the polyurethane contributes weather resistance. With the rising cost of labour and oil-based resins, the drive for VOC-reduction and the demand for long term durability, interest in polysiloxane resin systems (recognised as a means to incorporate thermal and weathering durability) has dramatically increased. In 2001, silicones comprised 0.3% of the resin tonnage used in coatings. Within a decade the use has more than quadrupled. Patent activity continues to climb and demand is expected to grow 12% annualy.
Generally speaking, polysiloxane polymers are silicones but in the coatings industry, polysiloxane coatings refers to a crosslinking resin technology that results in a silicone organic hybrid system. These are used in premium topcoat finishes and have facilitated the trend from three-coat (primer/base/topcoat) to two-coat (primer/topcoat) systems resulting in reduced labour costs and downtime, while improving weathering performance. The best-known of the polysiloxane hybrid coatings are the silicone-epoxy and silicone-acrylate systems. |
