Résumé : |
Manufacturers or surface coatings, particularly white, have long relied upon the use of titanium dioxide as the prime pigment in their industry. In recent years two factors have combined to spur the search for an alternative material to replace titanium dioxide. These factors are, not too surprisingly, price and availability. Amongst a number of potential replacement materials a considerable development effort has been undertaken to produce a novel polymeric additive for this purpose. This development effort has resulted in a series of polymers that are significantly different from the "normal" emulsion polymers known up to now. This paper describes the basic characteristics of one such polymer. The polymer in question is principally used, at present, in retanning applications where it has found wider use than simply as a titanium replacement. Results of a comparative study are presented to demonstrate the advantages that application of this polymer have on the general characteristics of retanned leather. |
