The VOC regulation continues to be a driving force for the development of new waterborne binders. But the use of water borne coatings based on acrylic or short oil alkyd emulsions have found limited acceptance in wood coatings, mainly because of the disadvantage that watersoluble chromophoric compounds like tannins may bleed through the applied water borne coating. This leads to discoloration of the coating, especially when tannin rich woods as Merbau, Oak or some others are used. In the case of alkyd emulsions, also retarded drying can be an issue, due to the deactivation of siccatives by tannin.
On the other hand, new high molecular weight, epoxy based w/b cationic primers show excellent barrier properties that can prevent topcoats effectively from staining and retarded drying. The basic principles of their synthesis and applications as primers for wood and concrete (prevention from "Nicotine staining") will be presented. |
