In this paper we first investigate particle size distributions of defoamer droplets in water-borne paints and inks. The size distribution of those droplets is of crucial importance for the defoaming effect. We have determined that it is influenced by different factors during manufacture and application: (1) shear rate, (2) emulsifying properties of the binder and other formulation ingredients, (3) time of incorporation and storage time, (4) viscosity ratio of defoamer droplet ηd and the matrix phase ηm and (5) the interfacial tension γmd between droplet and matrix. The given fundamental results enable better recommendations for the use of defoamer compounds and emulsions. |
