The organic coatings to efficiently fulfill the dual functions should possess good film is evident, since the failure of the bond between the coating and the substrate nullifies all other properties combined with adequate adhesion to the substrate. The importance of adhesion is evident since the failure of the bond between the coating and the substrate nullifies all other excellent properties that the coating may have. Generally to improve the adhesion of coatings/paints the appropriate amounts of coupling agents (known as adhesion promoters) are incorporated/added in the coating formulations. In the earlier reviews the findings of adhesion promoters as well as promoters other than silanes have been discussed. The present review discloses the findings on the adhesion promoters used for paints/coatings with a special eference to flexible substrates. The general observations on the performance of these promoters are described in a tabular form at the end of the text. This information may serve as guidelines in the selection of adhesion promoters for specific paint/coating' systems. Note de contenu : - Adhesion promoters for different types of paints/coatings

The reduction in molecular weight helps to achieve application viscosity by an increase in free volume. Various polyurethane polyols have been synthesised by reacting the diols with polyisocyanates. The molecular weight and polydispersity indexes of these polyols have been determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The viscosity of 50%. polyol solutions in various solvents has been determined at different temperatures. The temperature dependence on viscosity of solution of these polyols has been determined by the Williams, Landel and Ferry (WLF) equation. The non-linear regression analysis has been solved by using Levenberg Marquardt's algorithm. It is found that non-linear regression analysis gives high correlation coefficients and very low overall residual errors. The variation in the values of constants A and B for each WLF equation in the polyol solution indicates that these constants are system dependent. The values of constants A and B obtained for polyurethane polyols in a particular solvent have been used to calculate the values of glass transition temperature of the oligomer solution (Tg,) at different concentrations. The values of Tg, are found to vary with concentration. As the concentration of polymer increases there is an increase in the Tg, value. The tensile properties and resistance to scratch of resins prepared using these polyols and butylated melamine formaldehyde are better than those of conventional resins. The VOC content of these coating formulations is lower than the value prescribed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It i essential to charcterise it carefully before the coating formulation becomes commercial product. The majority of paint formulations are composed of components like pigments, resins, solvents, and additives. The knowledge abut their interaction parameters among the components of the paint formulation is very essential to access their compatibility . The sdesign of an organic coatig/paint formulation requires the understanding and establishing the phenomena involved from the stage of its preparation to the stage of it being used in actual service. In recent years, the physico-chemical properties of individual components and their intercation parameters are being examined more critically before a paint is formulated. This practice requires data on interaction and other physical parameters of the main components of the paint formulation. The information provided here on various aspects of raw materials and about their interaction parameters may help in designing paint formulations. This also provides information about the effect of internal and external physico- chemical parameters on the properties of coatings in service. The practical test data of physico-chemical, mechanical and corrosion resistant properties indicate the superiority of uralkyds over alkyds and their proximity to two pack polyurethane coatings. Based on the findings uralkyds could be recommended for protective coating systems where quick air drying, ease of application, better protective properties and low cost are the criteria of the choice of coating system.

In formulations containing primary or secondary hydroxylated diol the major part of the crosslinker is consumed by trans-etherification reactions and self-condensation. The aromatic nature of TDI imparts rigidity while the aliphatic IPDI results in flexibility of the backbone chain of oligomer. The profile of cure schedules has been determined in the form of a cure window which measures the extent of reaction in terms of crosslink density as a function of bake temperature. The experimentally determined properties like tensile strength and MEK rub-resistance have been taken into consideration for fixing the lower and upper limits of XLD in designing the cure windows of individual coating formulations. The baking schedules of coatings have also been expressed in the form of nominal and true cure windows.
