Coating formulations using micronized silica gels as matting agents are examined. Novel results obtained using a scanning laser profilometer are presented. Observations of film thickness and surface roughness were made in real-time during the drying process. It is shown that shrinkage near the end of drying contributes disproportionately to roughness. A micro-rheological model is developed, supported by SEM images of surfaces and cross-sections of dried films. Difficulties with matting formulations such as powder and some radiation-curable coatings are discussed in terms of this model. |
