As the President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, P. Klasona pointed out at the award ceremony in Stockholm ; his outstanding achievements had opened up new fields for scientific research and industrial activity. Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist who developed the periodic table in 1869, was also considered, but several leading chemists favoured Moissan. Further, Alfred Nobel's will stated that prizes were to be awarded to "those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind" and Moissan's work was more recent.
