Tannage Résumé : Leather tanning is a stabilisation process of skin fibers. This is achieved by the interaction of collagen amino acids with tanning agents to stabilise skin from putrefaction. Tanning of collagen with oil is a special class of tanning known as chamois tanning. Chemically, the oil tanning involves oxidation of unsaturation present in the oil, which is generally achieved by exposing oil treated skins to air. In this study, Benzoyl peroxide has been used as an accelerating agent for oxidation of unsaturated bonds present in the linseed oil for oil tanning process. Results shows remarkable reduction in tanning duration from fifteen days to two days. The chamois leathers prepared using oxidation accelerant (Benzoyl peroxide) have been evaluated for physical properties such as water absorption (611%), tensile strength (18 N/mm2) and percentage of elongation (66 %) which are found to be better than control leathers. Tannage Résumé : The oxidation of oil is an unavoidable process during oil tanning which aids in the forming of aldehydes that subsequently interact and react with amino groups in collagen. Oxidizing agents are commonly used to catalyze a faster reaction, thereby reducing days required for oil tanning. Fish oils are widely and regularly used for oil tanning. The oxidation of fish oil depends on its content of unsaturated fatty acids. In the current research, we focused on the kinetics of fish oil oxidation using Benzoyl Peroxide [BPO]. To assess the catalytic behavior of BPO, the kinetic study of the oil oxidation was carried out by determining the peroxide and p-Anisidine values. The maximum peroxide and p-Anisidine values were obtained on the 4th day. This is in accordance with our earlier studies. StyrèneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Styrene has the characteristics of low viscosity, low shrinkage, and excellent adhesion to a variety of polymer materials and is a good candidate for healing agents. In this work, styrene and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) are coated, respectively, by in situ polymerization using poly(urea-melamine-formaldehyde) as shell materials to prepare two microcapsules for self-healing materials. IR, SEM, TGA, and DTA characterize the morphology, structure, composition, and thermal properties of the microcapsules. The optimized reaction parameters of the BPO microcapsule are as follows: the combination ratio of emulsifier DBS and GA is 2:1 (0.2% + 0.1%). The pH value of in situ polymerization is 3, the stirring speed is 700 r/min, and the core-shell ratio is 1:1. The content of the two microcapsule cores can reach more than 80%. In addition, the fracture toughness and healing efficiency of the double-microcapsules epoxy self-healing composites containing 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 wt% of styrene and BPO microcapsules are measured using a tapered double cantilever beam (TDCB) specimen. The weight ratio of the two microcapsules in all self-healing epoxy composites was 1:1. The results show that the healing efficiency reached 37.3% when the content of the two microcapsules was 12.5 wt% at room temperature after 24 h healing. DTA results also indicate that this system has good potential for spontaneous self-healing performance at room temperature. Tannage Résumé : r-Methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was used as a coupling agent to introduce vinyl groups onto the surface of nano SiO2. A nanocomposite of MPNS/SMA was prepared by the polymerization of methacryloxypropyl nano SiO2 (MPNS), styrene (ST) and maleic anhydride (MA) with benzoyl peroxide (BPO)as initiator in toluene. The structure of the MPNS/SMA nanocomposite was characterized by FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope).
A series of tanning experiments have been carried out to compare the tanning and retanning properties of MPNS/SMA and styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA). The results show that MPNS/SMA has good tanning capability, and that leather treated with the MPNS/SMA nanocomposite is of good quality.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Chemicals and instrumentation - Preparation of MPNS/SMA nanocomposite
