Résumé : |
Water repellence is an important property of leather for several applications, such as footwear and clothing with high wearing comfort under wet and cold conditions. Waterproof shoe upper leather was first, applied in outdoor shoes and American army shoes and, thereafter, in golf shoes, safety shoes and winter boots etc.
Nowadays there is a growing demand for shoes to be waterproof. We estimate that approximately 10%-15% or even 20% of the global shoe leather production is to some degree waterproofed, and this market segment is continuously increasing. The increasing customers' demand and market trend fo high quality waterproof leather, especially for leisure or sport shoes and boots, has led to development of high performance water repellent products.
In the beginning, the development of water repellent products focused on achieving a high level of hydrophobicity and water vapour permeability. While most commercial water repellent products today meet the technical requirements of the market (Maeser and Bally-test, water vapour permeability) there is still a need for improving leather properties form the finishing point of view. |
