Globalisation is not - as is often asserted - an economic strategy in itself but a modern instrument for coordinating global business activities. It is driven by efforts to reduce costs and improve earnings. This paper is made up of three parts. The first part takes a current example at Bayer to illustrate the impact of globalisation. In the example described, the choice of location and an international manufacturing network are of key significance. In the second part, the phenomenon of globalisation is discussed in general and with respect to the coating raw materials industry. It is shown how tightly globalisation is interwoven with other trends in economic development. The third part examines the coating raw materials market in detail. This market offers wide-ranging potential to suppliers who commit themselves to a global presence and innovation. |
