Dioxyde de carboneIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the context of addition of carbon to East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) ecosystem, an attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive computation of carbon input by raw hides-skins and different chemicals ; and carbon output by various solid and liquid waste from the leather industry. The calculations are based on the conventional operations of nine tanneries of which three produce bag leather, three gloves and three shoe uppers. The amount of carbon that enters into the leather industry depends upon the selection of raw hides and skins, percentage of chemicals used and purity of chemicals. ln case of bag leather and shoe upper manufacturing units the carbon value changes depending on the tannery specific finishing recipe, spray types and number of coats. Besides this the carbon value also changes with the customeris required finish. Whereas the carbon value of solid and liquid wastes changes depending upon the carbon input, mechanical operations and the binding of chemicals with hides and skins. The analysis of large samples from nine selected tanneries has permitted us to calculate that 396.1 ± 11.67kg carbon are present in one tonne raw cattle hides or skins. The processing of this one tonne cattle raw hides and skins results in 65.54 ± 13.06kg carbon being incorporated with chemicals and, from which 320.75 ± 16.37kg of carbon are discharged in the EKW area through different solid and liquid wastes. The tannery agglomerates at the Calcutta Tannery Complex at Bantala, Kolkata are situated on the boundary of the EKW, a Ramsar site, and so this work is thought to be important to assess the carbon-budget of the EKW ecosystem. SyntansIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Synthetic tanning agents are indispensable for making any type of leather article. There is a challenge for syntans to be processed without formaldehyde to meet strict regulations in the leather goods and chemicals arena. ln the present study, formaldehyde-free melamine based retanning has been developed using glyoxal as a condensing agent and sodium sulfamate as a sulfonating agent. Sulfonated glyoxylated melamine-based resins were prepared using different mole ratios of melamine, sodium sulfamate and glyoxal.
The sodium sulfamate to melamine mole ratio (SS/M) was varied from 0.5 to 3.0 and glyoxal to melamine mole ratio (GIM) was varied from 2 to 6. Fluidity and gelling behaviour of resinous solutions were evaluated with the increasing trend of sulfonation and with increasing mole ratio of glyoxal to melamine.
Stabilized resins were applied comparatively as retanning agents on chrome-tanned goatskins against a conventional formaldehyde based melamine resin. Comparative tear strengths, tensile strengths, elongation at break and scanning electron micrographs of glyoxylated melamine and formaldehyde-based melamine-retanned leathers were studied and better performance was found in glyoxylated melamine-tanned leathers. The resin with optimum performance was structurally elucidated by FTIR.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Chemicals and apparatus - Preparation of sulfonated melamine glyoxylated resin

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather processing involves diffusion of various chemicals through the pores of skin/leather matrix. Pore-size of the matrix has significant impact on the diffusion rates of the substances involved. The determination of pore-sizes and related parameters is necessary for an understanding of the diffusion phenomena in leather processing and related techniques. There are some limitations in existing pore-size measurement techniques for natural fibrous materials like leather; hence there is a need for development of novel techniques with non-influencing character on structure of materials like leather. In this regard, a capillary flow porosimetry technique for pore-size measurement has been applied to two types of leather viz., full-chrome crust leather (FCC) and vegetable-tanned crust (VTC). By utilizing the capillary flow porosimetry technique, important pore-size parameters such as smallest, largest and mean pore-size plus porosity and average Darcy permeability have been determined. The respective values are 0.04p, 0.93p, 0.13p, 59.1% and 0.027 respectively for FCC leather and 0.04p, 0.67p, 0.11p, 49.9% and 0.021 for VTC leather. The results indicate that FCC leather has greater porosity compared to VTC leather; possibly due to chrome tanning providing less filling effect compared to vegetable tanning. Simulation par ordinateurIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In this paper, the microscopic spatial structure change of natural leather collagen Ill (i.e. 1bkv collagen) was simulated using Tinker software. The dynamics of the process for 1bkv [amino acid sequence number of Type III collagen] collagen was simulated at 300K, 320K, 340K and 360K, Through a series of analyses we find that Rg (radius of gyration) of all of the atoms of 1bkv collagen molecules increases with the increase of chosen temperature, and its average value decreases from 24.9Å to 21.0Å. Considering this along with the simulation trajectory of dynamics at different temperatures, people can find that the molecular chains of collagen gradually will become curved, and there's a large degree of bending at 360K. This is further evidence that the atomic distance between collagen molecules is getting smaller with the increase of the experimental set temperature, and it can also explain the mechanism of performance degradation of natural leather. Tannage au chromeIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The effect of chrome content in chrome tanning liquid on the physical and mechanical properties of leather when using the specially designed leather tanning machine were studied and the leather was characterized by EDS and SEM. The results showed that, considering the chrome content in leather and the physical and mechanical properties of leather, the best chrome content in the chrome tanning liquid was 16g/L. The EDS results showed that the distribution of chrome in leather was relatively uniform. The SEM results showed that the collagen fibre dispersion of leather tanned with the leather tanning machine was better than the leather tanned by drum.
