The use of surfactants to make aqueous polymer dispersions (by emulsion polymerisation) causes problems in the final adhesives or coating film. This article describes a new non-migratory surfactant (NMS) technology that has application in the mainstream market. The advantages of the NMS technology are demonstrated by comparing their performance against formulations containing conventional surfactants. Latices prepared with NMS exhibit a superior colloidal stability and can be used to make virtually water insensitive dry polymer films with high gloss and low blooming. Use of NMS improves protection of the substrate, durability of the coating, together with improved appearance and handling properties. |
