The monomer compositions used for copolymerization were calculated from glass transition temperature (Tg) using Fox equation. These copolymers were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, DSC, TGA and the presence of liquid crystalline state in the polymer was confirmed by using polarizing photomicroscope. The potential utility of these liquid crystalline acrylic copolymers for coating applications was assessed by testing various coating properties. Coated films had excellent adhesion, hardness, flexibility and chemical resistance, which are important characteristics for coating applications. Note de contenu : - Synthesis of acrylic copolymer

The potentiality of liquid crystalline acrylic copolymers for coating applications were assessed and the data so obtained shows that LC polymers possess 100% adhesion, hardness between H -4H, drying time in the range of 4-12 h, viscosity between 89-79 cps and better chemical resistance. Both the acrylic copolymers and liquid crystalline acrylic copolymers were studied for their coating applications.
