ABSTRACT
Corrosion is a destructive process that often causes failure in metallic components and structures. The best protective coatings that are most commonly used for corrosion control rely mostly on barrier and inhibitive mechanism. However, progressively stringent environmental regulations have resulted in the ban of many commercially available corrosion protective coatings due to the harmful effects of their solvents or corrosion inhibitors. The present paper focuses on recent developments in multifunctional, smart coating which releases corrosion inhibitor as demanded by coating damage and the presence of a corrosive environment for the autonomous control of corrosion. A new generation of anticorrosive coatings possessing passive matrix functionality and active nanocontainers responds to changes in the local environment has prompted great interest. New materials such as nano-structured materials, microcapsules and intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) present opportunities for development of damage-responsive coatings. |
