Teinture -- Fibres textiles synthétiquesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : A hyperbranched polymer which comprised a polyesteramide structure was used to study improvements in dyeability of fibre grade polyethylene terephthalate films. The optical measurements of the dyed samples showed that, by increasing the percentages of the dendritic additive, K/S as a dye uptake parameter changed in the presence or absence of a carrier. The amount of chroma increased while the hue did not change significantly. The dyeability of the prepared samples was attributed to the decrease in glass transition temperature and the lower crystallinity of the polymer, as studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Thus, a new fibre grade polyethylene terephthalate, which is dyeable, could be obtained, with less need to use a toxic carrier compound. Vernis -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the present study, attempts were made to develop an index of geometric appearance capable of accurately predicting and quantifying the visually perceived geometric aspects of appearance of achromatic automotive finishes. To this end, three previously prepared individual scales for the three most significant geometric appearance attributes, namely specular gloss, distinctness of image (DOI), and orange peel for each of a series of metallic black, metallic gray, metallic silver, and solid white automotive finishes were utilized. The differences in each attribute were quantified visually by a panel of 16 observers, in terms of a lightness difference of an also previously prepared lightness scale. The innovative use of a common lightness scale showed that there is a surprisingly good correlation between the instrumentally measured specular gloss, DOI, and the LW parameter of the Wave scan instrument and the corresponding visually evaluated equivalents at the four investigated achromatic levels through minimizing observer errors and enhancing accuracy of the perceptibility procedure. These high accuracies made provisions for the implementation of the principle of additivity which led to the derivation of a geometric appearance index (GAI).
However, before its derivation, one instrumentally measured parameter was remodeled exponentially to define an innovative parameter chosen to be named "percent absence of orange peel". The proposed GAI illustrates high correlation with visual assessments and is herewith recommended as a stand-alone index for predicting the geometric appearance of automotive finishes. Furthermore, this index together with a
chromatic appearance index could form the foundation for deriving a total appearance index for the automotive industry.Note de contenu : - Preparation of appearance attribute scales

(Wikipedia)

RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of color attributes of appearance on the corresponding geometric attributes of appearance of non-effect coatings. Three scales, namely gloss, distinctness of image, and orange peel for three achromatic (black, gray, and white) and four chromatic (red, green, blue, and yellow) basecoats, each at varying levels, were prepared. The gloss and the distinctness of image scales had a sample with a maximum degree of gloss and distinctness of image, respectively, and the orange peel scale had a sample with a minimum degree of orange peel, which was considered to be the standard sample. The visual differences between the standard sample and those remaining in each scale were assessed by a panel of 28 observers using a prepared one-dimensional lightness scale based on the CIELAB and CIEDE2000 color difference equations. The correlations between visual and instrumental measurements of scales were checked, and instrumental performance with respect to visually assessed equivalent differences in gloss, distinctness of image, and orange peel were determined, giving STRESS (standardized residual sum of squares) values = 24.3, 11.6, and 9.7, respectively, in terms of CIELAB. ANOVA together with simple, lasso, and ridge regressions were applied to test the effect of color on the geometric attributes of appearance. The results illustrate that color attributes of appearance have no adverse significant effect on the main geometric attributes of appearance for non-effect coatings.

ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Many attempts have been carried out to increase the scratch resistance of clearcoats using various appropriate additives. These additives may increase surface hardness or surface slippage, and/or enhance the bulk mechanical strength of the clearcoat. In the present study, the influence of various added loads of three differently structured polysiloxane additives on the scratch resistances of an acrylic melamine clearcoat was investigated. A series of analytical instruments, such as a laboratory carwash simulator, a scanning electron microscope, an optical microscope and an attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, and others were used to compare the effects of the various added contents of polysiloxane additives on changes in the viscoelastic properties and scratch morphologies of the resultant clearcoats. The results illustrated that all polysiloxane additives improve the scratch resistance of such clearcoats, yet the optimum load varied for each individual additive. There is also a good indication that polyether-modified polysiloxanes improve scratch resistance by increasing surface hardness, while the fluorocarbon-modified polysiloxane tends to change the viscoelastic properties of the clearcoats. It was also found that scratch resistance varied linearly with Micro-Vickers’ hardness for brittle clearcoats. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENT : Investigated paint system - Scratch test

Vernis -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Two different types of nano-silica (i.e., hydrophilic Aerosil 200 and hydrophobic Aerosil R805) were employed in the preparation of 2-pack acrylic polyol polyurethane nano-coatings so that the electrochemical properties of the resultant coatings could be investigated. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to evaluate the corrosion performances of such nano-coatings applied onto mild steel substrates that were immersed in 3.5% (w/w) NaCl solutions. It was observed coatings that contained nano-silica increased the barrier properties of the binder, as well as the coatings’ electrochemical resistance compared with pure polyurethane coatings. The surface tension of pure polyurethane was measured by a tensiometer. Rheological properties were also determined at various shear rates by a rotaviscometer. Results showed that the surface tension of hydrophobic nano-silica is very close to the pure polyurethane matrix, giving the better compatibility of the two. This was further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and by the fact that the hydrophobically filled nano-silica coatings showed shear thinning behavior in the fluid state. Also observed was better corrosion performance of the resultant hydrophobic nano-coatings compared to coatings embedded with hydrophilic nano-silica.
