Teinture -- Fibres textiles synthétiquesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Traditional textile dyeing processes usually require large quantities of water and energy and generate wastewater that can be harmful to the environment. Dyeing in supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) media is promising in textile coloration due especially to it providing a waterless process and eliminating the need for an energy intensive drying step. The natural anthraquinone emodin showed promising results for dyeing different fibres through sc-CO2 process. However, emodin is mutagenic. The aim of this study was to develop non-mutagenic derivatives of emodin that can be applied to textiles using sc-CO2. Emodin structure was modified incorporating acryloyl groups, which are considered suitable for decreasing potential for DNA intercalation, and thus mutagenicity. The presence of acryloyl groups would also enable atmospheric plasma induced bonding with fibres. Molecular modelling studies showed that emodin derivatives became less planar with increasing number of attached acryloyl groups, making intercalation unlikely. The derivatives produced were tested to assess mutagenicity in vitro (Salmonella/microsome assay, TA1537, 10% S9) and in vivo (micronucleus test in hemocytes of aquatic crustacean). We found that emodin can be derivatised using acryloyl chlorides to give mono- and di-acrylate esters suitable for dyeing polyester fibres in sc-CO2. However, the new dyes presented mutagenicity for both in vitro and in vivo. Although the derivatives provided greenish-yellow alternatives to emodin for dyeing synthetic fibres, they do not appear to be viable alternatives from the point of view of preserving human and environmental health. Plasma bonding studies are underway.

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The present work describes the design of nontoxic pyrazolidine bisphenol (PYBP)-based hydrophobic benzoxazine (PBz) matrices, in comparison with that of bisphenol-F-based benzoxazines, and investigates their efficiency toward corrosion protection on mild steel surfaces. The preliminary in vitro toxicity assay studies infer the nontoxic nature of PYBP. Data obtained from thermal and surface studies indicate that the PYBP-based PBzs possess higher thermal stability than those of bisphenol-F benzoxazines. Observations from SEM images suggest that the inherent hydrophobic nature was due to the formation of rough surfaces. The corrosion studies of the specimens were carried out using open-circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization. Among the mild steel specimens, coated with different benzoxazines, the poly(PYBP-oda)-coated specimen was found to be less aggressive toward corrosion showing 90% efficiency and charge transfer resistance (Rct) of 381 kΩ cm2. Thus, data obtained from different studies suggest that the PYBP-based benzoxazines can be used as a better coating material for steel and steel products against corrosion.

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Biomass soybean oil-based polyol rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) was modified and prepared by expandable graphite (EG). The effects of EG on the thermal stability and flame retardant properties of soybean oil-based polyol RPUFs were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis kinetic analysis, conical calorimetry and flue gas toxicity analysis. The results showed that modified RPUF (RPUF-4) with EG content of 20 wt% had the highest initial and end temperatures, the highest activation energy E, the lowest Ds (17.6), and the highest light transmittance (73.6 %). At the same time, RPUF-4 had the lowest heat release rate (10.1 and 16.5 kW/m2), the lowest total heat release (1.5 and 2.1 MJ/m2), and the lowest average toxic gas emissions. The current study indicated that RPUF-4 had better thermal stability and flame retardant performance, which provided a useful reference for subsequent biomass flame retardant modified RPUFs. In a project on the subject of fiber dusts, a study is being carried out on how toxic such fiber fragments are, and which shredding technology is most suitable for preventing – or at least reducing – the release of inhalable fibers.
