Tannage Résumé : This study examined the characteristics and environmental load of sheep skins that had been treated with silk hydrolysate by two different methods : prior to tannage and after tannage. Silk hydrolysate was applied to the leathers before and after tanning in four different proportions. The chrome oxide content and shrinkage temperature, tensile strenght and tear load of the leathers increased as the proportion of silk hydrolysate increased, and the highest levels of chrome exhaustion in the tanning effluents were obtained at an application level of 5% on the basis of leather weight. In addition, silk hydrolysate was found to improve wastewater parameters such as chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, salinity and electrical conductivity. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The huge amount of fleshings from tanneries around the world creates a negative environmental impact, in addition to disposal costs ; these wastes are not well used. This paper presents some innovative processes for reclaiming the fats carried by a large variety of flesh hides or skin wastes, along with the fatty matter separation and modification to obtain a surface active material intended to be used as leather softening agents.
The fat was extracted with hot water at a fixed temperature (85 +/- 5°C, solid : water 1:1 w/v and 2 hours stirring time). The fat rich phase was then separated and purified with n-hexane (fats : n-hexane 1:8 w/v, ambiant temperature and one hour stirring time). The fat was cooled to 12°C and filtered under pressure to isolate the unsaturated oleic fraction and exclude the stearic fraction. The chemical evaluation of oleic fraction indicated that it was suitable for the production of leather softening (fatliquoring) agent. The product was treated with sodium bisulfite (1,5 mol/kg based on weight of fat, 85°C, 2 hours stirring and continuous air flow). A good quality fatliquoring agent was produced. Application of the fatliquor emulsion on wet-blue leather showed enhanced mechanical properties, tensile strength, elongation and improved appearance. Thereby the waste was transformed into a valuable resource.Note de contenu : - METHODS : Separation of fat from fleshings - Separation of unsaturated oleic fraction from saturated stearic fraction - Analysis of unsaturated oleic fraction - Sulfitation process - Analysis of sulfited fat - Evaluations of fatliquor emulsion - Fatliquoring process - Evaluation of fatliquored leather - Scanning electron microscope

Spectrophotométrie UV-VisibleIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In order to control pollution by glutaraldehyde, a simple, accurate and sensitive reverse flow injection analysis (rFIA) UV-spectrophotometric method for determination of glutaraldehyde in leathers is proposed in this paper. Glutaraldehyde and hydroxylamine hydrochloride undergo a condensation reaction at 40°C. The absorbance of the complexe compounds is measured by a UV detector at 236nm. rFIA variables affecting the system are also discussed. Under the optimal conditions, the linear range of this method was 0.5-200 mg/L ; the detection limit was 0.03 mg/L ; the relative standard deviation was 0.784%. This method was suitable for automatic and continuous analysis, and successfully applied to determine the content of glutaraldehyde in leathers. TransglutaminaseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : It was reported that supercritical fluids could increase the reaction rates and stability of enzymes. The transglutaminase (TGase) was used as a cross-linking agent for collagen fibre and cattle hide in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCF-CO2) medium. The denaturation temperature (Td) and shrinkage temperature (Ts) of the cross-linked samples were determinated. SCF-CO2 could improve the cross-linking reaction of the TGase with the collagen fibre and cattle hide according to the denaturation temperature determination. For collagen fibre, the Td of TG-SCF-Collagen is about 20°C higher than that of TG-Collagen in water medium. While the Td of cattle hide treated with TGase in SCF-CO2 is about 10°C higher than that of in water medium. Interestingly, the shrinkage temperature of the cattle hide did not show any change while it was treated by TGase both in SCF-CO2 medium and in water. However, the appearence of the hide after TGase treatment was tighter and finer with the area reduction. The results implied that intermolecular cross-linking created by TGase did not like the cross-linking by chrome (III)tanning agents, which formed rigid structures among the collagen fibrils that play the main role for the increase of shrinkage temperature of leather.
