Currently a wide variety of fatliquors are being used in leather manufacturing. There is a lack of information, however, regarding their performance in terms of physical properties of the resultant leather. Such information certainly is very informative for the leather manufacturers to select the right fatliquors to meet quality demands. We have therefore recently conducted a comparison study on the physical properties of leather prepared with various types of fatliquors. Results showed that the type of fatliquor applied in a fatliquoring process does not directly affect the physical properties of leather, instead, the actual concentration of fatliquor will govern the results. Data indicated that a lower Young's modulus induced higher elongation and resulted in increased tear strength. Observation showed an excellent correlation between the softness of leather determined by manual assessment and the Young's modulus. It appears that one of the key functions of fatliquoring is to reduce the initial deformation resistance. Data also showed that the initial strain energy is an improved method to determine the initial deformation resistance, which takes the non-linear viscoelasticity of leather into account and is easier to measure and to define. Therefore the initial strain energy is a better objective method to determine the softness of leather instead of the subjective manual assessment. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Thermal analysis of chrome bovine leather was performed by means of thermogravimetry (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass-transition, the crystallisation and the denaturation temperatures of the collagen molecule within the leather matrix were measured. At low moisture content one single endothermic peak which corresponds to the denaturation process of leather and the evaporation of water was detected. At higher moisture contents two endothermic peaks were detected, the first one corresponding to denaturation and the second one to evaporation of water. The temperature of the low-temperature peak decreased as the water content increased. At much higher moisture content the low temperature peak maintained its temperature being equal to the shrinkage temperature of leather determined by the IUP-16 standard method. The glass transition of room-conditioned leather determined by DSC in sealed pans was approx. 45ºC. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Speciation of chromium in the effluents of two local tanneries has been carried out using two procedures. In the first procedure, Cr(III) was precipitated as Cr(OH)3 while in the second a cation exchange resin (Amberlite® IR 120H) was used for its preconcentration. The separated Cr(VI) was then determined in the solution with the aid of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The efficiency of the two procedures was first tested by analyzing synthetically prepared solutions containing the two Cr species. The two methods were applied for the determination of Cr(VI) in samples collected from different sites in the two tanneries. The results revealed that Cr(VI) is detected in the wet finishing step of the tanning process of the two tanneries at average concentrations of 10.5 and 16.6 µg ml-1 respectively and is also present at a much lower level namely at 0.42 and 2.39 µg ml-1 in the final drain of the two plants respectively. The validation of the suggested methods was confirmed by ion chromatography. It is advised to collect the wastewater of the wet-finishing Speciation of chromium in the effluents of two local tanneries has been carried out using two procedures. It is advised to collect the wastewater of the wet-finishing step separately and pass it through an Al2O3 column for the removal of chromium, before it is allowed to mix with the rest of the plant effluents.
